I just saw "Treasure Planet"...
Got invited to a screening this morning of Disney's Treasure Planet. The theatre was packed with little kids, and I took my 4 yo son.
He was thoroughly caught up in the story and didn't stir once. He would lean over and ask me if I liked that part or that character. The story was easy for him to understand and follow and the violence was minimal.
Not your traditional Disney film. The only movie I can compare it to is Tarzan from a few years ago.
Personally I liked it. Good story. Good action. The animation was beautiful. The voice casting was pretty good. The seemlessness of 3D animation and Traditional methods is getting close to the point that you don't notice it. There are some places in the film where it is very obvious and then some places you forget that you are looking at both... particularly the scenes with Mr. Silver.
All in all I give it 3.5 of 4 stars. I'll definately get this one on DVD, I hope for a two-disc treatment with several docs on how they went about the process of fusing 3D with the rest.

My problem with something like Atlantis, is that Disney doesn't know what the hell it's doing. I mean, it was a great concept, Atlantis combined with Jules Vern. But then they utterly ruin it, by unable to being able to decide what age group it's for...

The Disney movies were actually good when they had song and dance moments. (see Aladdin, Lion King, Beauty & the Beast, etc.)

If you think that's bad read this review:
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/11/27/movies/27PLAN.html
The main characters in "Treasure Planet" — Jim Hawkins, Long John Silver and assorted crew members — fly around on a spaceship (and it really is a ship, with masts, crow's nest, keel and sails) called the RLS Legacy. The initials refer to Robert Louis Stevenson, whose classic of juvenile-adventure lit is the ostensible basis for the new animated feature from Disney. But the movie, which opens today nationwide, is less an act of homage than a clumsy and cynical bit of piracy, designed to steal time and money from schoolchildren and their harried, Pottered-out parents during this very long holiday weekend.
...
They set out in search of loot and adventure and wind up learning lessons about friendship, loyalty and self-esteem, which have all the resonance and originality of poorly copied homework assignments.
The animation, at least, is a little better, though the story gives the army of technicians very little to animate. The universe of "Treasure Planet," with its blend of archaic and futuristic imagery, and of androids, slimy space creatures and cute terrestrial animals, owes something to the grand whimsy of Japanese anime. But the delicate magic of, for instance, Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away," which Disney released earlier this fall, is absent from this brainless, mechanical picture.

It's doing 72% (63% majors) at RottenTomatoes. That's actually really really good at RottenTomatoes, most films hover between 40-60%.

I thought Treasure Planet was a kick ass movie, with terrific animation and good action... I think it's one of the better Disney flicks in the last while...certainly better than Atlantis and Lilo & Stitch...

Box office seems to be weak. Well I'll definitely watch it.

Very good movie, much better than I thought it would be. Lots and lots of action. Because this is from a classic book, the story had great characters and story line. Artwork was breath taking at times and I can't wait to here the sound on my home system.
I think Disney has lost people attention becuase of the past few movies they have done and it is going to hurt them at the boxoffice for Treasure Planet.

Disney Fanboy recently disappointed but...
Man I thought it was spectacular, much better than I expected at all, being I scowled at the MTV- esque trailer. It reminded me of a really, really good remake of 1978s Message From Space.

I really thought this was a fun movie, the animation was incredible. However it was really wierd seeing this movie all by myself this afternoon - the first time I saw a movie completely and utterly alone, no one, nada, a private screening for moi.

This movie was worse than I ever expected. I had a half day at work, and I planned on catching the matinee for a while when I saw I was scheduled to get off early that day, and I enjoyed Atlantis enough. Atlantis wasn't the greatest animated adventure ever made, no, but I still thought it was good.
The animation in Treasure Planet was good, I will give it that. But that's all I will give it. A story I was interested in and characters I cared for are definately two things I will not give it.
I have seen two Disney movies in recent history in the theaters: Tarzan and now Treasure Island. Both were colossial disappointments, in my estimation. And it's bad movies like these that make me question seeing any Disney movie in the theater, so I wind up missing good movies like Emperor's New Groove and Lilo and Stitch.
Why didn't I like it? Too many annoying characters, for one. BEN, flatulent alien, and Morph were just too much. And all the critics were right: there was no point in them making Treasure Island into a sci fi adventure. It's just there for eye candy. I didn't find myself caring for any of the characters, there was nothing making me care if dog boy and cat woman wound up together at the end, no amount of emotion when the first officer bit the dust (tho I was surprised to see Disney actually killed a character off!), and they find a way to travel thru a portal that reminded me way too much of Land of the Lost. I felt like walking out of the theater half way thru, tell the cashier I got beeped for an emergency and if I could get my money back, but I stayed for every agonizing minute.
Atlantis and Titan AE were far better movies.
And, like Tarzan, I will not waste money on the DVD when it comes out
