Question about Aragorn...

Watchin' the extras on the Extended edition right now, and Peter Jackson just mentioned Viggo Mortenson being the second choice for Aragorn. Anyone here remember who was originally cast in that role? Thanks in advance for any help.

I think it was Tom Selleck, but he was busy doing some TV show instead.

I've also been wondering about this casting situation. IMDB wrote that the original actor and Peter Jackson? had creative differences that's why he left. Or is it the truth that the original actor was too young to play Aragorn?

It was Stuart Townsend, aka "Lestat" from Queen of the Damned.

Too young, too pretty, and not half the actor Viggo is.

I always had the intuition in years past that VM was headed for great things, and I am glad he's finally getting the props he deserves. He is Aragorn.

Hell yeah he is! I was worried when I first heard of the cast choices, because I didn't know any of them except Fordo, Sam, and Gandlaf. and of course Liv! But I am really happy that they went with lesser known actors. They all played their parts superbly.

Is it also true that Daniel Day-Lewis turned the role down?

Probably Ben Affleck. He's been offered everything else in the past 3 years.

Shoulda been Hugh Jackman, but Viggo will do. Jackson shoulda got Wil Wheaton or Gary Coleman for Frodo, though.

It's funny, it was Stuart Townsend himself who kept telling PJ, "You cast this role too young." Well, he got his wish! Ha!
