Successful Offspring

The first one that comes to mind is Tatum O'Neal, the youngest female to ever win an Academy Award (Best Supporting Actress for 1973's "Paper Moon"). She is the daughter of actor Ryan O'Neal (who is just an Oscar-nominee for 1970's "Love Story).

2) Jason Patric (okay, this is stretching it, but he did star in a hit a long time ago with "Lost Boys"), the grandson of The Great One himself, Jackie Gleason

3) John Ritter (TV's "Three's Company" and cinema's "Sling Blade"), son of country-western singer Tex Ritter

4) The Cassidy's: David Cassidy and Shaun Cassidy, both sons of Jack Cassidy (a cinema feature star back in the day, although I don't think I've ever seen a one of his pictures). David & Shaun both had #1 TV shows ("The Partridge Family" and "The Hardy Boys," respectively), both had #1 hits ("I Think I Love You," by The Partridge Family featuring David Cassidy in 1970 and "Da Doo Ron Ron" by Shaun in 1977), and both never made it out of "child star" hell, unless you consider soap operas a suitable trade-up.

Who else???

how are you measuring success? by box office or awards?

i think you'd have to consider Drew Barrymore if it were box office.

The only measure of success would be if you've heard of them.

Drew Barrymore certainly applies!

For starters, let's mention Michael Douglas, son of Kirk Douglas.
How about Jeff Bridges and Beau Bridges, sons of Lloyd Bridges.
How about Peter Fonda and Jane Fonda, children of Henry Fonda.

Martha Plimpton is the daughter of Keith Carradine and Shelley Plimpton. Campbell Scott is the son of George C. Scott and Colleen Dewhurst.

Nick Cage is really a Coppola. He changed his name as to not ride his (Uncles?) coattails.

Yep Uncle...
The son of comparative literature professor August Coppola (a brother of director Francis Ford Coppola) and dancer/choreographer Joy Vogelsang, Cage changed his name early in his career to make his own reputation, succeeding brilliantly with a host of classic, quirky roles by the late 1980s.
