Best portrayal of a fictional US president?
I just got through watching The Contender on HBO and I just thought that Jeff Bridges probably gave the best performance of a fictional president I've ever seen. He brings authority to the role without losing the touch of being a real person. I think it's really underrated and lost among the other great performances in The Contender.
What is your pick as the best portrayal of a fictional US president?

First one comes to mind is Harrison Ford in Air Force One.
Second one is the guy in Independence Day
Not saying best portrayal, but those immediately came to my memory as presidential performances.

Rock Hudson as President Thomas McKenna in the 1982 TV movie/miniseries World War III (not available on DVD).
It's the movie where a small band of inexperienced U.S. soldiers defend an Alaskan pipeline maintenance station against a Soviet special forces group intent on capturing the station in order to use it as a bargaining chip in negotiations against the U.S..

After seeing "Deep Impact" I'd vote for Morgan Freeman as president in a New York minute. Too bad the movie wasn't good.
Another choice, although not from a film is Dennis Haybert in "24."

However, I'll go with the following order:
1. Henry Fonda in Fail-Safe (1964)
2. Fredric March in Seven Days in May (1964)
3. Rock Hudson in World War III (1982)

Bill Pullman in Independence Day...
....NOT!!!!
seriously: I'll second Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove, and I also really enjoyed the Contender. I can think of two others (not necessarily the best of course):
Eddie Albert in Dreamscape
Alan Alda in Canadien Bacon

I don't know about the POTUS, but the best leader of a country (portrayed by an actor in a movie) was Richard Dreyfuss in Moon Over Parador.
what the hell - Kevin Kline was my favorite on-screen Pres.

I don't think it count's as far as the question at hand. However, I really like that film and am glad to see it mentioned

E.G. Marshall in Superman 2 rocked. At the very least he set up one of the best lines of the whole movie:
President Marshall: "Superman! Can you hear me? Superman! Where are you!"
General Zod: "Who is this Superman? Come to me, Superman! I defy you! Come and kneel before Zod!"
God that was cool.

After much consideration, I have to delare it a tie between Bill Pullman in ID4 and Michael Douglas in The American President. They managed to be good and capable presidents as well as sympathetic human characters. I admired Jeff Bridges in The Contender, but I felt that Pullman and Douglas were more well-rounded characters overall.
