Jason X

Dude, what's up with this movie? I just rented it last night, knowing that it wouldn't be able to keep up with the past FT13 movies, but I was hoping it wasn't going to be as hollywood as it was. It was so rediculous I can't even believe it. I wasn't scared or shocked at all throughout the whole movie, and as time went on, I noticed that the actors weren't all that scared either. They never seemed to be disoriented, or act, in the least bit, like this was even really happening. Too many attempts at humorous one liners ruined any chances of suspense, or at least would've removed any that was built up. The lighting was too bright and there was nothing on the set that looked realistic. All the lines were so dumb and the scene where the professor was getting his nipples pulled by one of his students, just added another reason to never watch the movie again. It was obviously not the point of the director to scare anyone, but to see how far he could go to make the "unltimate Jason", while in the process, forgetting who he was dealing with. The whole "raw" feel of most of the previous movies was not found anywhere in the film. Definitly not a recommended movie if you're an avid fan of the series, although some might see it just to say that they've seen them all.

The only good part of the movie is one of the deaths. Jason sticks one womans head in some kind of "dry ice" stuff and when he takes it out her whole face is frozen. Then he smashes her head on the counter and shatters it. Pretty new and "futuristic" kill for Jason, and I think it held up with the "gore" of it with lots of blood and "inner face" juices running wild. The rest of the kills where mediocre to average.

the only thing that really scares me is that this is the kind of crap that directors are turning Jason into. I don't think we'll ever get our old Jason back... at least not without Wes Craven or something.

Any other comments are welcome.

I liked it when I saw it at the theatre. Like it even more on dvd. At least it has extras (take not Paramount!!).
At least it was better than the awful sequel number eight.

hated it. new line seem to be making a mess of this franchise since they took it over. i respect them for trying to freshen things up, but their interpretation of F13 does nothing for me. this film in particular. they've dumbed it down for 10 year olds, even though 10 year olds aren't supposed to watch it.

Jason X felt like a direct to video affair, in style and content.

and i think F13-part 8 is infinitely better than Jason X. it's no classic, and even though it's dumb, it's not insulting which i clearly felt Jason X was.

I thought it was great!

It wasn't scary at all! It was just FUN! It was exciting, and the thrills never let up. I can't think of one scene in the movie where something intresting wasn't happening. I think it had some really original ideas (
Spoiler:
Tricking Jason into thinking he was back at Camp Crystal Lake. "Wanna drink some beer?" "Wanna smoke some pot?" "Wanna have some pre-marital-sex?" "WE LOVE PRE-MARITAL SEX!!"
) It was all in fun.

Not all horror movies are meant to make you cringe in fear, some of them are just "leave your brain at the door, take it for what it is" fun. You can tell the cast had a hell of a time making the film, and I'm sure the director wasn't trying to make a scary movie, but a thrilling, fun movie. And that's exactly what he did.

Also, Wes Craven never directed a Friday the 13th film.

These movies were never scary - even as a little kid. This is not a recient development, they were always "Shock and gore first, scare second" from the get go.

Me, I thought that the movie was a sly nod to what had come before and the whole teen slasher movie genre. Unlike the over-the-top and annoying Scream movies, this one was well done. . . um, well done for a Friday the 13th movie that is.

I know that Wes Craven hasn't done one, but I really like his work and if he did do one of the FT13th movies I think it would take a step back to what it used to be.

I know I ask for a lot when I watch a movie today and expect it to have the same "feel" as a movie from the past (like the original), but I just wanted more a "eery" feel and less "in your face" Jason.

You have to admit that a lot of the lines in the movie that were supposed to be used as some kind of witty comic relief doesn't really need to be in a horror film. I mean people being mudered by some crazy guy, are not going to be worried about being witty.... unless you're an robot, I guess.

I just miss the originality of the whole series.

Credibility - out the window. Wes Craven would likely do MUCH worse.

Relax, it's a movie. IMO, a very good one for the 10th installment in a franchise. I'll watch it over a Bond movie any day.

Yeah I really like the jason X film. ya know, for a Friday the 13th flick, I'm NOT looking for a A level film ya know. heh.. For me it was more sort of like a throw back to the monster flicks of the 50's.. ya know, as in see monster, see monster crush stuff then the film ends..

I do not think it was ment to be a scary film really.. After all we ALL know what is going to happen.. Every film Jason kills damn near everyone and gets killed a few times but OH no wait maybe he was not killed and so on..

Not sure one could make a Friday the 13th film anymore with any type of suspense really.. I tend to think this happens to almost all the horror films when they start to crank them out.. If you think about it, Halloween was great, then it got to be sort of like just him walking around stabbing people..

heck even the "Alien" films stop having a really scary vibe being by the 4th film we sort of knew what they could and could not do and so on.

Same for Jaws and.... well ya get the idea and those were just same o same o by number 3 really.. Now look at the Friday films.. 10 of them!! doh... We all know what Jason is going to do by now, at least Jason X was sort of a fun film IMO of course..

I'll watch this repeatedly just to see Lisa Ryder kick Jason's @ss! I thought she was smokin' hot, loved her sassy attitude.

You sir, are clearly insane. Jason Takes Manhattan is part 8. The absolute bottom of the barrell. Please tell me you meant part 7.

Actually I've taken a greater appreciation of this genre of horror movies since I stopped taking it so seriously. As someone stated above, it's fun . . . entertaining . . . which is more than I can say about a whole bunch of these Criterions that so many people are ga-ga over. If Criterion's the pimp, then the average DVD Talk member is the ho. Armageddon? The Rock? If they came out with Ernest Goes To Camp the Criterion collection, we'd have a bunch of pseudo-intellectual sscratching the whiskers on their chins and saying, "Ach, so!"

I own a bunch of "serious" movies and it's nice to get away from that . . .

Thanks guys! You've shed a little bit of light on this for me. If I really sit back and take the movie for what it is, instead of trying to compare it to what I want it to be, it was a "fun" movie. It seems as though I'm one of the few that initially disliked it... maybe I'll give it another try with a more open mind.

Thanks everyone!
Mike

Man, I loved Jason X, I think it's one of the best F13 movies ever! It will probably make my top 10 for the year. It was sooo fun!

Btw, I'm not being sarcastic.

Beckman, my question is, after all the reviews and everything and not a good movie since the second one, did you actually think this would be a winner?
It was made to make money, thats it and to please some of the people on here that actually thought it was.....GREAT!?

If you want a non slasher flick that is actually kinda scary, rent Frailty or The Others or older flicks like Burnt Offerings or The Entity.

Dont take this for what it is (crap) set your standards higher dude!

I hear ya. My standards are pretty high, which is why I didn't like the movie in the first place. I did like Halloween: H2O, which I heard was a flop. So I thought that maybe, since I was in a crowd all by myself with Halloween, this one might surprise me. I look forward to a good horror flick, and they are hard to come by now-a-days. The old "slasher" days are gone, so after a while I'll be out of GOOD new horror movies.

I wasn't that thrilled with the others, but haven't seen Frailty yet. Maybe I'll check that one out next. I'm a die hard horror fan, and my standards might have to be lowered in order to tollerate todays more jovial side of the genre.

ugh... Frailty... just predictable suspense free crap IMO.

I actually liked Jason X and I have never been a huge fan. I always liked an occasional watch but this was a fun movie to watch. One thing that bothered me was that some of the deaths weren't as clever as I was hoping. The first one on the spaceship was great but the rest were only average deaths. I did love the girls at the end at crystal lake. That had to be the funniest way to finish them off. Anyway it was a decent leave your brain at the door rental, but I did think the other Friday the 13th's were scarier.

The sleeping bag gag was an homage, JGTH, I think.

Close, it was a homage to The New Blood, where he kills a woman in a sleeping bag by swinging it and breaking her on a tree. Man, talk about a huge ovation for a death scene in the theatre. It was great.

Considering that 7 is one of my favs and JGTH is one of my least favorites I probally should have got that piece of trivia.
