Harold and Maude - your thoughts?

I'd like to get people's opinions on the cult classic Harold and Maude. I've always enjoyed it, but certainly know a lot of people who loath the film.

I was first introduced to it at my JC in a flim class and it has been of my favorite movies to watch. I can see why some would not like this film, but everything from Harold's homelife and his relationship with Maude seem to me to work very well.

Now this is a seriously dark, comic movie -- one of my favorites. I first saw it in grad school and have used it ever since as a gauge about whether or not I will like people. If they like it and understand it, I can hang with them. If not, the chances of us getting along are substantially reduced.

A very good HAl Ashby film it's unfortunate that his career was soo short. If you liked Harold and Maude ckeck out another Ashby film Being There with a stellar performance by Peter Sellers. Also if anyone is in Delaware this weekend the Rehoboth Beach film festival will be showing Harold and Maude on the big screen.

One of my favorites. This is a Great film with a great Cat stevens soundtrack. I agree, you either get it or you don't. But this is an all time classic.

Last year in my Advanced Drama class, my teacher was out for the day, so the sub decided to bring this in. In a class of 25 kids, 23 of them hated it... but I absolutely loved it. I'm just attracted to dark dark dark comedies, I guess

"Harold and Maude" is a great, hilarious, sweet, touching film

So many great parts:

All of the
Spoiler:
fake suicides
;
Turning the convertible Jaguar into a hearse;
"Nathan Hale!";
Stealing the tree - especially the cop;
"If you want to sing out, sing out";
the old priest giving his opinion of their relationship:
(paraphrasing) "When I think of your young, tight body, writhing in ecstasy with her wrinkled... skin... and flabby... buttocks... it makes me want to VOMIT!"

Great characters, great score, GREAT MOVIE! Look in the dictionary for "black comedy" and you should find "Harold and Maude"!

You should try watching Mae West in Sextette !! At least the late great Ruth Gordon didn't pretend that she was still twenty six! This is a wonderful movie, a real quirky classic. I never tire of watching it.

Just had to drag up this old thread because I finally saw this last night after hearing about it for so long... What a wonderful, quirky movie. The subject may seem distasteful, but it's handled with such style and compassion that it works beautifully. I even like the Cat Stevens songs, and I'm not a fan. Bud Cort was just genius.

Possibly my favorite lines:
Spoiler:
Psychiatrist: Tell me, Harold, how many of these, uh, "suicides" have you performed?
Harold: An accurate number would be difficult to gauge.
Psychiatrist: Well, just give me a rough estimate.
Harold: A rough estimate? I'd say... fifteen.
Psychiatrist: Fifteen?
Harold: That's a rough estimate.
Psychiatrist: Were they all done for your mother's benefit?
Harold: No, I would not say "benefit."

... I've heard Wes Anderson sing this movie's praises and I can see the influence it had upon "Rushmore" (although the relationship there was a lot less "extreme" and Max less depressive). Some amazing sight gags and slapstick scenes but a whole lot of heart as well. Although the DVD's pretty bare bones (wonder if there's any chance of Criterion or someone doing an SE?) I may well pick this one up now. A hidden gem.

Picked this one up blind a year ago. Bud Cort does a great performance (even rivals his performance in Dogma ) and the movie overall is...satisfyingly great!

I've always liked this movie (first saw it when I was 8 or 9, at the movies), in spite of the fact that I always found Maude a bit scary (and now, I've seen Rosemary's Baby, so I think she's even scarier).
