There's a line in the film after Ryan's helicopter crashes where he is talking to that woman in the office and she tell him to stay south of the city because the wind is carrying the radiation north. Of course he leaves before he hears all this information.

In addition, the enclosed car and helicopter may have provided some protection during the blast. But they were also hit by the shockwave, not necessarily by the radiation.

These are some possibilities I suppose.

It was stated in the film that
Spoiler:
the fallout was blowing to the North and East, and that they were safe where they were.

A better question is where the heck did those F-16's fly from in order to hit that Russian airbase? And B-2's are only based at Whiteman AFB in Missouri, not Aviano, Italy. And how did Aflacks PDA work after the blast? And where was the Carriers fighter cover before the Backfires hit it? OH the questions...........Sum of all Fears sucks.

I really enjoyed the novels of the Clancy films, and I did think HFRO is great. How does Sum stack up? Worth a rent? Buy used for $10?

Not up to calibre of Red October but worth a rent (or buy if you found it for $10 )

I was expecting a total suckfest but actually quite enjoyed it.

I watched it again on DVD last night. I thought it was a good movie, great effects and a good storyline.
