Watching Spiderman again...does DaFoe deserve an Oscar for this?
You know, I'm watching Spiderman for the second time (first on dvd), and I've gotta say, Willem Dafoe was incredible as a supporting actor in his role. Should he get an oscar for this?

You know I was thinking the same thing... especially because of that scene when he is talking to himself in the study and his mask is hanging on the chair... that still creeps me out.

I just watched this movie for the first time tonight on DVD. In my opinion it was entertaining but hardly amazing.
As far as DaFoe is concerned, I think his has a great deal of talent. However, an Oscar for this? I think not. Then again, it all depends upon what an actor's up against in any given year.

While I thought DaFoe was very good at portraying the Goblin/Osborne, I voted Hell No.
In all honesty, I thought DaFoe did a better job at acting than Nicholson as the Joker, and Hackman as Luthor. DaFoe actually became a character, while both Hackman and Nicholson did what seemed like little more than variations on their own personalities. However, none of the above are worthy of Oscar.

DaFoe is an incredible actor and he did an incredible job with a role that could have turned out to be pure camp. An Oscar? No.. maybe he deserved one in one of his many previous roles (he was very under rated in Boondock Saints) but not this one.

if they gave out Oscars for a single scene.. sure, he deserves it. the scene of DaFoe talking to himself in the mirror, seeing him go back and forth from Osborne to Goblin was truly great acting.
however, the only Oscar this film may get any nominations for will be for VFX.

If McKellen couldn't score a deserved win for FOTR, another 'genre' film, there's no way in heck Willem will even get in the door here. Besides, like others have said, he's good, but not jaw-droppingly great IMHO.

So I guess I was just too into him being crazy...and my basis for the thread was the mirror scene, which was DAMN NICE. But, as some have pointed out, that's not enough for an award.
So no oscar, how about a blockbuster award? LOL

For Spidey, no. However, I saw Auto Focus today and think he deserves a nod for it. I haven't seen many other strong supporting performances this year (aside from Yoda), and don't know whether he deserves the win, but it gets irritating to see him nominated in that category so much and keep losing.

Dafoe, one of the great actors of his generation, was wasted through David Koepp's mediocre screenplay for this film.
In short, no, through no fault of his own.

Hell no.
I thought the mirror scene came across as incredibly cheesy.
The funny thing, IMO, about Spiderman was how different it was each time you viewed it. All my friends agreed...the first time you watch it you are very caught up in the special effects but the secon time you watch it you realize just how bad the acting is.
For example (IMO):
I like Willem Dafoe...just not Spiderman and his role in it.
