I enjoyed it. Sorta felt to me like "Home Alone" for adults.

OK, I missed this in the theater and just finally got around to watching the DVD.
I was fairly disappointed in this movie. One key thing that killed it for me, (and please explain if I missed something here) Foster's character manages to come out of the PR to grab her cell phone out of the bedroom. She did not have much time because the one bad guy is close by, just around the corner. Allright, the cell phone won't work in the PR, this was predictable. But toward the end of the movie, when ALL the bad guys are downstairs, (four floors down) she comes out of the PR again BUT DOESN'T THINK TO TRY HER CELL PHONE, where she will most likely get a signal?!? Also, I still don't really get why she would not let on to the cops that there were intruders present. The cop gave her that opputunity with the eye blink thing. Ya, sure, the bad guys got her kid, but you have to think that with all that's been happening, the cops are going to show up at some point anyway. (As they eventually did) Plus, she did manage to get a call through to 911 with the re-wired phone. Even though the call was cut short by the bad guys, the police are generally required to send a unit over to check out 911 hangups. And her husbands character was so annoyingly wimpy and useless. They practically could have left his character out of the movie entirely for all it added to the plot. I'm a big Sci Fi movie fan and I could not manage to suspend dis-belief enough to really enjoy this film. I'll be ebaying the DVD. I can not imagine wanting to watch this again. |
I have to say that Phil brings up a good points, that and he posted in my resurected thread. I thought that PR was a lot more disappointing than the hype but still enjoyable (I didn't pay for watching it though). I did like Forrest Whitaker though. I am also glad that the movie was short.

I thought it was an ok movie, not great or anything. I thought the ending was kind of a boring conclusion, especially the extra scene with Jodie Foster and her daughter looking in the paper for a new place that lasted for like 15 seconds. That was just pointless to me. But the acting i thought was very good, especially forest whitaker

Finally got around to seeing this myself a week or so ago... I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Not great, certainly not perfect, but a good film... Better than Fincher's last effort (yeah, you read right).

the technical geeks that take in everything about a movie such as camera movement, and lighting and things like that like the movie.
as far as J6P goes, i don't think many people care much about it after the initial viewing. |

I was really dissapointed in it. I was thinking that it would be a fairly suspenseful scary movie. It was neither.

I saw it this weekend and liked it, but what I really liked were the camera shots.
I'll probably buy this sometime. Sure there are some plot holes, but this is a movie that I enjoyed watching. It's almost like an "eye candy" movie. |

I just saw this and I was not expecting much, and I thought it was okay. I have a question that Phil brought up. How/Why does the Tac Team show up? She gave the cop no indication that anything was wrong, so why do they show up?
|
Good film. But requires better HT to enjoy it on DVD.
BTW, why is someone calling this a Sci-Fi when it's straight up thriller? Maybe you're expecting a Sci-Fi and didn't get one so you got all upset w/ the film? |
I thought it was a good movie, good camera work, good atmosphere overall.
My only gripe is with the three bad guys. You had the evil violent bad guy who only cares about himself (Yoakam), the moron bad guy who's in it for the money (Leto), and, of course, the bad guy with a heart of gold (Whitaker). Just a bit cliché IMO. Oh and I'm also tired of seeing diabetic, asthmatic or epileptic kids in movies. You just KNOW at some point in the movie they're going to be used as a cheap sub-plot when they need their medecine. And of course they ALWAYS get it in time (in Hollywood movies anyway). |
I thought it was just an average, 2 star movie—nothing special. I’m sure there was an excellent thriller in there somewhere, but Fincher failed to find it.
|
Some people said that it was an adult version of Home Alone. But for me, the movie is good. I love how Fincher did it with the all the camera movements.
And Jodie Foster. With her in it, it couldn't be bad. |
I really enjoyed Panic Room.

i liked it.

Loced it and the opening credits were the best I have seen in an age. partly to do with my love for nyc.

Great rental, I did not buy it.
I did love the movie in the theater and on DVD. |
Loved it.   The atmosphere, camera work, lighting and acting are all great.

I think Panic Room is much better appreciated with the added context of Fincher's previous films as well as 80's / 90's Hollywood crime dramas and stalker thrillers. The Fincher mind games are there, just not in his usual way. Much of the meaning is lost if you don't take into account the director's previous work and the film in relation to previous films.
Major spoilers ahead... The ending exists as it does for two purposes: to continue Fincher's distinct anti-consumerist message, and to turn the traditional Hollywood crime/police relationship on its head. As Ebert says, this is as close to realistic as a film of this subject matter will ever get. The characters act with real emotion and in ways that real people do / would. What happens when a criminal gets caught in the act? In Hollywood, if he's sympathetic or if he's nice to the protagonists, he gets released. In real life, he gets put in jail, because being sympathetic or nice does not alleviate the responsibility of committing the crime. So in the end of almost any other crime drama or stalker film, the feeling of futility remains with the victim, because either the stalker has the upper hand at the end or the justice system proves ineffective. In the end of Panic Room, the feeling of futility is left with the criminal, because no matter how nice or sympathetic he was, he realizes he is still a criminal, and ultimately the system did work and he is caught. This is a huge step for Hollywood. Also notice that the major characters were initially motivated by consumerism or money: Meg was purchasing an extravagant house that she didn't need (even if it was partially for revenge), and the criminals were coming after money (even if one of them was going to use it for his family). Two of the criminals died for this, and the other one, even when we thought he was going to get away, gets caught and has to just throw the money away because it is ultimately meaningless. Meg and her daughter would have never been in the situation in the first place if they hadn't let their consumerism get the better of them, and at the end they are looking for a domicile that fits their needs, not their wants. As a standalone movie, I think Panic Room is a tense and well-crafted thriller, but in contemporary film history, it is an anchor point. |
I felt it was a very entertaining movie with one of the worst endings. There were so many holes in the story. It was too distracting and made me enjoy the ending less.

It's a great fun action thriller flick. I enjoy this movie.
It isn't Fincher's best work but he did a really nice job with it though. I want to buy this movie on DVD, but I don't want the Superbit. |
