My Dinner With Andre -- A comedy??
I recently re-watched My Dinner With Andre after first seeing it like 20 years ago. I'm not going to get into my initial or current feelings on the movie except that I could in noway see how this was a comedy. And, it is classified as a comedy on the back of the DVD.
Apart from such comments as "if you are watching this movie, then the joke is on you", does anyone see this even remotely as a comedy?

Comedy is in the eye of the beholder. I wouldn't necessarily classify it as a comedy, but I probably would think much of it if I saw it in that section of a video store. A lot of movies get classified in ways with which I wouldn't agree. Is Fargo a comedy? What about The Player? I've seen both classified as such.
What say we agree My Dinner With Andre is a movie about a couple of guys having a conversation, which touches on a number of different subjects, some of which members of the audience might consider humorous, and leave it at that?

I like the movie very much, and I too am befuddled at its classification as "Comedy." There was maybe one time when I cracked a smile, I suppose, but I was really engaged in the conversation, in a serious way. Not sure why it's called a "Comedy" either, I remember thinking the same thing when I finally saw it last summer.

Groucho: See, that's the problem with newbies ( in comparison to those of us who have been here since God knows when ). They have no idea what the hell you're talking about when you tell them that Wallace Shawn died.

I thought that it was unbelievably boring, as I did The Player. At least The Player can pass for satire, but MDWA was only mildly entertaining in some parts...

I really wanted those My Dinner With Andre action figures from the end of Waiting for Guffman. When I saw that in the theater, I literally hurt my sides laughing so hard.

I had to watch this film in college for a sociology class. one of my roommates was in the class as well, so we watched it together. i thought it was incredibly boring, but maybe that's cause i was watching it for a class.
anyway, the lone highlight of the movie for me was when the guy actually says "inconceivable." we had joked about that before the movie. "hey, that's the guy from the princess bride. the one that says 'inconceivable' all the time." and when he said it in "my dinner with andre" it was just to funny.
... or maybe you just had to be there...

BTW... how's the Otter Farm's kitten population lately? I haven't been visiting much of late.

The Player a comedy? Yes
What's wrong with you of course they are
My Dinner With Andre a comedy? I guess so. While not a comedy precisely, what other category would it fall under?

Greatest. Gag. Ever.
I died laughing when I saw this. 'bout fell out of my chair actually.
My roommates thought I'd lost it... they're not exactly familiar with the Wallace Shawn oevre... but I'm sure they still mourned his passing.
