"The Fellowship of the Rings"

Spoiler:
I still irks me that Frodo tells Aragon that he is breaking off from the group and continuing the quest alone, Bakshi left this aspect of the story intact in his animated film, what made Jackson decide to alter this?

Giles, I actually preferred the movie ending to FoTR.

Spoiler:

Specifically it shows to the audience that Aragorn is a good person, and does not want to be tempted by the ring as he knows he would be. It shows him worthy of becoming a king down the road.

I wholeheartedly agree. I would have ended the movie on the ledge. A down ending would have been much better.

Three I can think of:

Boxing Helena - Should have ended five minutes earlier. Still would have been a bad movie but at least one that left an impression.

Back to the Future - It's always gnawed on about the resolution regarding Doc. I know its necessary, esp. in lieu of the sequals but it always seemed to cheapen things for me.

Das Boot - It was like so depressing man! (just kidding..it ends perfectly and should not be touched)

Yep... A.I. was flawed but good til the Spielburg syrup started to pour. Then it became insufferable.

On Mulholland Drive... I wouldn't change the ending either. I've only seen it once, but think it's Lynch's best work (really haven't liked him much from Wild At Heart on... no, not even Twin Peaks). Thought it was fabulous actually. It's as if something finally gelled for him and his unique vision. It's so much his work that I can't imagine anyone altering it but himself!

Like JustinS mentioned early in the thread, the ending of heat kind of bugs me. While it is still one of my favorites action flicks, the ending just didn't make much sense with the rest of the movie. It could have been so much more. 2 potential endings, he walks out past the girl in the car and gets away. Or during the final chase, he shoots Pacino and gets away.

I always thought that at the end of Lethal Weapon 2:

Spoiler:
Riggs should have died from his wounds when he was shot by the South African dude. I know that would have blown the next two sequels, but who cares. It would have been strangely poetic that this crazy suicidal cop finally dies and is in a way back with his wife somewhere. It would have been a real fitting end to the character.

That's a pretty damn_good ending I wouldn't mind that myself, but then it would mean we wouldn't get that cool opening in part 3. I'm such an Eric Clapton whore

I've always thought the ending of The Green Mile should have ended with
Spoiler:
Coffey surviving his execution, due to his powers, and ended up getting away with the help of Tom Hanks.

Probably the only time I would actually enjoy a Hollywood ending.

The Shawshank Redemption.
Spoiler:
The beach scene at the end just didn't belong.

Fatal Attraction's original ending didn't test well so they filmed a different ending. No doubt the new ending resulted in a better box office than the original would have but IMO the original was better.

For A Perfect Murder they went to great trouble and expense, taking everything to England (where Gwyneth Paltrow was filming Sliding Doors at the time) to film a new ending and then they ended up using the original anyway. IMO, the new ending was better.

At least we have both of the unused ending on the DVDs.

The Shawshank Redemption.
I agree, Stephen King's original ending was better. It had Red staying in the same room that old guy committed suicide in. Not really knowing if the beach was real, but hoping that the beach existed. It ended with simple hope. I liked that.

I agree wholeheartedly with A.I. and Abyss having horrible, film ruining endings.

Another less exposed film comes to mind, The Pledge

Spoiler:
The film builds up to the final confrontation between Nicholson and the Bad guy only to have the Villain die in a car accident on the way there and Nicholson looses his marbles, stupid and utterly anti-climactic

I actually found the A.I. ending more suitable after a second viewing (what can I say, I like the film.)

that being

Spoiler:
his mom is reborn, then dies, and is gone - forever - even if the technology came along where they could live more than a day - she could never come back. tho - the Kubrick "He'd pour drinks for her for the rest of time." ending would have been funny.

I must certainly concur with the comments about The Shawshank Redemption.

Spoiler:
I would have ended with Red saying "I hope I can make it across the border...I hope..." or however that line went. The beach scene was a fairly glaring flaw in an otherwise terrific film.

I guess this one is fresh in my mind because I just re-watched it a couple days ago. The Color of Money.

There should have been a viewing of the final game.....

Why? Considering Felson's final dialogue, it would have been a moot point.

Gotta disagree with this one...

One of the biggest mistakes in movie history was to show the boxing match that takes place at the end of Rocky III at the beginning of Rocky IV. Mind you, Rocky IV itself may have been of the biggest mistakes in recent movie history, but Rocky III ended on a great freeze frame and it was a great way to wrap up the movie.

It sort of like horror movies and lingerie...some times its what you don't see that makes it all the better.

She calls him on the cell, he shows up, goes to kiss her, she stops him and tells him that she just called him to say goodbye forever and that it just won't work out between them.

The Ring

Spoiler:
It would have been interesting for both Racheal and her estranged boyfriend die, leaving the kid to deal with Samara on his own for the last ten minutes. The real ending is somewhat of a copout IMO.

Star Wars:AOTC
Spoiler:
Don't end it with the wedding. End it with the consumation of the vows man!

Mulholland Drive
Not really a spoiler, but both women should have wound up in bed with me!

This is the only SE change that I would keep if it were up to me. Thru the rest of the movies, it's this small band of people that we're focussed on against a larger backdrop, and the ROTJ SE ending reveals to us that there even the smallest person/group can change the universe. They weren't just terrorists, they were in the right place at the right time, naturally they became heroes.

A better ending would be a combination of the two, to contrast the effect on the beings across the galaxy and a small tribe of furballs on a backwater planet. What would really help is if Luke, Han and Leia's arguments from the novel about why the Ewoks should help them were in the movie. Han and Luke both try to convince them they're a part of a bigger galaxy, but Leia finally convinces them by saying "Do it for the trees". A combination of the SE and original ending would be a good example of these arguments.

Too bad that edition is out of print. I'm so happy I picked up 2 copies while they were still available.

The Mummy Returns

Spoiler:
I wouldn't have the Scorpion King look like a piece of **** that a second grader could've drawn and animated.
