"Welcome to the Dollhouse" was released in the US on 24th of May, 1996. As such, it is not a 1995 film. Nor is "Dead Man", which was released on the 10th of May, 1996.

I just realized that about Dollhouse so came back to this thread to change my vote......someone else said it above so it stuck in my mind.

That being said, I'm a little surprised you picked Showgirls over Braveheart (which isn't even on your list!). While you may not be a fan of the film, it certainly deserves to be in the Top 25 of that year, IMHO.

Personally, I feel that Braveheart was the best film of the year. No doubt.

Cheers!

I'd much rather watch paul verhoeven bring in the cheese rather than mr. mel gibson.

I am going to get some flack for this but I am not a mel gibson fan. Braveheart is nothing new under the sun and if I will rest easy never hearing "freeeeedoooom" ever again.

I do appreciate your feelings about 'lord'. The film was unjustly
served by critics and thrown in the august release garbage bin by
mgm/ua.

So it's a personal bias against Mr. Gibson, rather than a bias against the film itself. How dare you be governed by your bigotry!!! JK!

No flack from me, but I'm interested in your theory behind it being "nothing new under the sun". If you deconstruct the film to its archetypal core, it is certainly derivative - but then, most films are. And while it's always nice to see T&A in a film (kudos to Verhoeven!), Showgirls was a shallow treatise of a shallow subject matter. Surely you can agree that Braveheart is a better film - even though you may not have appreciated Mr. Mel, or the story. Not too mention it had been a long time since we've had an epic of that style produced in Hollywood.

I do appreciate your feelings about 'lord'. The film was unjustly served by critics and thrown in the august release garbage bin by mgm/ua.
I'm of the mind that every year there are a few films that are unjustly crucified by the media and the critics. Lord Of Illusions is one such film.

Cheers!

Without question it's L.A. Confidential

Lynn: You're the first man in five years who didn't tell me I look like Veronica Lake inside of a minute.
Bud White: You look better than Veronica Lake.

raith-

My disliking (note dislike, not hatred) of the film was prior to me truly disliking mel gibson as an actor.
I will agree that the film is somewhat derivative in accordance to the content, but the structure, narrative, characterizations, and so on are a bit weak.
I'm am not interested in watching hero stories on film as the true hero stories in life are never accurately told or are largely ignored.
Now If you asked me if I liked braveheart more than the patriot, you would get your yes.
That film I wouldn't waste an effort in trying to explain my distaste for it.
------------------------
Showgirls is a satire of the american dream/way of life, as most of verhoeven's american films are somewhat satirical. I will not wax defense about the film because it's content provokes or better, tests the moral aptitude of it's audience, and I may make some enemies, but I will say that I really dug what verhoeven had to say with it. And it's a really funny film to boot (and I believe the laughs are intenional)

In the end it all comes down to personal taste.
That's why film is special. There are a lot of different things
to go around for different people.

On the surface only, jax.

It was also my choice for best film of 95 and one of the very best of the decade.

Yeah, I knew that would happen eventually - How 'bout right now we close 2000 and even 1996 since the results are clear there... and let the others stay open for a bit.

I can't close them myself, can I? I don't think so... of course, you could give me mod powers! If I can close them myself, please send me an email and I'll do so with those 2 right now. If I can't though, please go ahead and close '96 and 2000.
Nice work Jon!

Seems like '95 wasn't too bad of a year for flicks. Rather than second guess myself, I'm gonna vote for Braveheart...that's what the numbers say. My 9+ movies for '95.

10:
Braveheart
To Die For (sure I'll get blasted for this)

9.5
Dead Man Walking
12 Monkeys
The Usual Suspects

9
Get Shorty
Seven

Other noteables for me are Casino, Leaving Las Vegas, Heat, and Toy Story.

What a pair though...I actually saw To Wong Foo and Congo, which means I saw two of the worst movies ever in '95. Bad movie props to Johnny Mnemonic, Judge Dredd and Showgirls.

Fair enough! And yes, I'll be the first one to take the piss on The Patriot. Painful - very painful!
