Let's get a little daytime-talk-show-trashy here! Which type of DVD collector irritates you the most and why? For what it's worth, I voted for the film snob, if for no other reason than the fact that none of the other three ever try to pass themselves off to the other types of film fans as more "enlightened", which always seems so grotesquely egotistical and lacking in even the most minimal amount of hubris...

By the way, the word "cl*******" above should have read as "class-hole", but I don't see an option for editing the poll options...

How about, the people who have to bitch about every little thing they can, from the sticker on their Shrek case being hard to come off to the 200-minute Godfather Part II having to be put on two separate discs because it's such an enormous friggin' pain to have to actually get up and swap discs to the ones complaining about Citizen Kane not being in 2:35 widescreen because they're too ignorant to realize it wasn't shot in 2:35 widescreen.

Well, we could all go on for page after page listing that specific, pigeon-holed type of DVD, film, or home theater consumer who drives us up the wall, but I'm specifically curious about your opinions regarding the various, more generalized types of DVD collectors out there only, as covered in the above poll selections.

This is poll is really meant to be taken more as light, but telling, amusement than as a chance to vent with venom...

I'm a non-sequitur, logic-defying, how-the-hell-does-he-define-quality movie geek who (impossibly) has the CITIZEN KANE DVD next to CON AIR & APOCALYPSE NOW next to MALLRATS, and can't fathom what the problem is.

I buy movies I like, it doesn't matter if it was directed by Akira Kurosawa or Michael Bay.

I hate the snobs though some movies can be mindless entertainment keyword ENTERTAINMENT it's ok to watch a movie and lose yourself in something that may not "flow" or be 100% logical.

My favorite are the DVD buyers that don't even watch the movie anymore. They simply buy them to look for edge enhancement.

"OMG I can't f**king believe it...I was watching my Criterion edition of (enter name of a great movie) and there was EDGE ENHANCEMENT every where!!! I just couldn't enjoy the movie...the edge enhancement was too distracting!"

Or this guy...

"You mean that Seven Samurai doesn't have a DTS track...WTF?...forget it I'm not buying it."

palebluedot and troystiffler, I didn't want to include peoples' bothersome idiosyncrasies with the technological side of DVDs, for fear the poll options would be a mile long. Think of this poll as being concerned with which type of DVD collecting vis-a-vis film aesthetic rubs you the wrong way...

I'm category 3. I've got French classics and Hong Kong action and B movies all mixed together. I like the movies.

I'm with palebluedot. I can't stand the guys who don't care about the movie so much as the other stuff. In my case it's animated menus and lotsa extras.

Just the other day somebody was posting that they'd rather sacrifice picture and sound quality on a long movie than have to switch discs. That rubbed me the wrong way.

Also, people who post DVD topics in the Movies forum.

Same here. I can't stand these pricks. Especially the ones that say "not all opinions are equal" or "you have bad taste." There is no other reason to watch moves other than to be entertained, be it through laugher, thought provoctation, fear, being disturbed etc. IMO. I avoid discussing movies with people that don't agree with that. I don't give a ***** about the "art" of film. I just want to be entertained in some way. Be it through a mindless popcorn flick, or a disturbing movie like Requiem for a Dream.

I voted number one... The others can be pretty bad also.

It also annoys me whenever people only refer to a movie by it's foreign name. Just because you know the foreign name doesn't make you either smart, cultured or bilingual... but I digress

I don't really have a problem with any of the choices above... different people like different types of films. But, you didn't include the type of DVD person that I can't stand -- the type who refuses to try new things.

This is the type of person who refuses to watch films made before 1970 ("they're boring and dated"), refuses to watch films that are in mono ("I like 5.1 sound, I didn't spend all of this $$$ to listen to mono"), and refuses to watch black and white, silent, or subtitled films.

I have no problem if someone watches CITIZEN KANE and decides that they like INDEPENDENCE DAY better. That's fine by me. But the type of DVD fan that "rubs me the wrong way" is the one who watches ID4 over and over again, but refuses to even consider watching a film like CITIZEN KANE or BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN.

I DO have Mallrats and Citizen Kane and Armageddon and lots of Hitchcocks, Chaplins, Kubricks and Farrely Brothers and there´s NO PROBLEM WITH THAT.

The DVD fan that pisses me off is the one that only buys movies on DTS. Yeah, as if Modern Times is supposed to have helicopters going round and round the room.

I coudn't agree more. Funny that the term "movie snob" is always applied to the 1st option in the poll ("classic" film lovers who will refuse to watch anything else) but never the other way around. So I choose to call this reverse snobbery which is just as bad.

Personally, it's all about having an open mind and be willing to experience new genres and/or time periods in films. And also beeing able to make the difference between what you "like" and what is "good". I don't mind when people say they were entertained by ID4, but when they also add that it's one of the best films ever then there's a problem.

Thought of some more:

• The poster who berates "Joe Sixpack" for preferring the open matte presentation of 1.85:1 movies, but throws a hissy fit when a film is released in mono because it doesn't fill his speakers.
• People who respond to well-written complaints about crappy films with this one-liner: "It's not supposed to be a best-picture winner...just turn your brain off and enjoy!"
• People who dismiss a film with useless "reviews" like "It sucks" or "It was boring."
• People who pretend to be OAR advocates, but then when you go to their house they are watching Citizen Kane in stretch mode.

For me, the worst kind of person is the kind who refuses to cultivate a taste for classic cinema and sees nothing wrong with this. That's the cinematic equivalent of living your life at McDonald's. While I wouldn't object to eating there occasionally, it's unhealthy and vulgar. I have a little more tolerance for the youth in respect to this; they have had much less time to seek out variety, to expand their horizons, to view films made over a hundred years of filmmaking.

Everything is not entirely a "matter of taste".

I have vote for the whinny "I hate snapper-crapper" people. Like the case has anything to do with the disk inside. Some even go so far as to refuse to buy the movie because it's in a dreaded snapper. "They don't fit on my self", "snappers look so ugly", "snappers ruined my marrige".

With all due respect, looks like you fit into the first category on the list. It IS all a matter of taste. Just because someone doesn't care for "your" "classic" movies do not treat them as if they have some type of mental deficiency.

I can't stand the opposite.

People who write "well-written" complaints about a movie like say, Armageddon make me want to wretch. The movie is beneath them because "That could never happen." "There was no plot." "It isn't art."

Yeah, no kidding. You didn't know this when you saw the trailer?

I have no problem with replies like "It's not supposed to be a best-picture winner..." to these snobs.

Let me say though, that I am not referring to all complaints. Some are justified when they discuss movies that clearly were intended to move the viewer. My contention is complaints about films (like Armageddon) that are just supposed to be fun.

#4 for me. I'd rather have to sit on an airplane next to a snob than next to someone who thinks Face/Off "rocked!!!"
