You honky. I agree it is a fine ending, but would add:

The Dresser
Phantasm
Planet of the Apes (original)
Bridge on the River Kwai
Episode V ("It ends on such a down note. It's so much more like real life. All Jedi had was a bunch of Muppets!")

How can anyone not mention Shindler's List
Shindler's List . The survivors placing the rocks on Oscars grave is one of the most touching scenes ever filmed! I am a 34 year old male who crys like a blubbering idiot whenever that scene comes on. Has to be at least one of the greatest endings ever.

Glory--- I love that charge into the fort. I always turn up the volume and feel that scene.

Memento---Or was it the begining? really great ending I thought.
The theme that was played added to the scence a lot

edited to add

Unbreakable--that one moment that David realized who Elijah really was and the emotion Elijah showed in that moment

Pulp fiction---Vincecent Vega gets shot and killed but is alive at the end talk about eating your cake and having it too!

Wow, this thread needs an award for longest period between death and resurrection.

I agree with Raiders, but everything about that movie is perfect IMHO. I have always liked the ending to Say Anything, the way it kinda leaves you wondering whatever happened to Lloyd & Diane. The Empire Strikes Back is the best ending of all the SW flicks IMHO. Unfortunately, I feel that the sense of desperation it leaves you with isn't carried over to ROTJ very well.

Many great ones mentioned, but Cinema Paradiso (theatrical) gets my vote.

The ending of that wonderful, wonderful movie is one of the most cathartic film experiences I have ever encountered.

My reaction:

Spoiler:
I was right there in the theater with Salvatore wondering, "What is it?" after all these years. Then the reveal and realization slowly dawned and then BAM! a torrent of feelings and emotions - pure joy, sweet sadness, delight, love, surprise, pathos, and sympathy overwhelmed me as the tears flowed down my face just as they fell down Salvatore's. One of the best endings ever.

Here are a few recent ones that I didn't notice as I scanned over the thread. I was wondering why a few weren't listed, then realized that this thread is from 2002!

Adaptation
American Psycho (Not really "recent", but I didn't see it listed before.)
Big Fish
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Garden State

I liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Lost in Translation, and In America for recent movies...Star Wars A New Hope will always be my all time favorite ending of a movie.
