I managed to find a set of the "original" original trilogy & they play great on my Tosh-2109, but don't do so well on my friends Daewood. Opinions? The Daewood seems to have problems with skipping (it plays 1/2 seconds worth of movie, pauses, then skips ahead about 5 seconds later, repeats.)

I am now planning to buy the "official" VCDs as I hear tha Luca$ is further tweaking the original trilogy. My ultimate goal is to have all three versions someday.

*ANY* DVD is better than Highlander, the only DVD ever which was made from a VCD master, of all things. How it got THX certification is beyond my imagination.

This has nothing to do with the Star Wars VCDS or DVDS.
While searching for the DVD Star Wars , I was at a VCD etailer and skimmed the films that they had listed. I saw SONG OF THE SOUTH listed as coming soon. Unfortunately I lost the site and cannot remember the name. If anyone is searching and finds this site or any site offering SONG OF THE SOUTH, pleaselet me know.

Just FYI: BadAsh's original review pointed prospective buyers to his homepage to find out more information about where to acquire these "boots."

Unfortunately BadAsh's homepage is no longer listed in his profile.

And even if that information (or his homepage) was available, I'm a little skeptical as to the veracity of his source. When I originally contacted the source listed on his site, the source sent me an email vehemently denying that he/she/it sold the Star Wars DVDs.

I've since found no other source from which to purchase the actual ORIGINAL CUT DVDs (aside from the shady schmoes on "Scalp-bay.") Sure, there's many, many sources for the Asian VCD Special Editions. Any decent music store should carry copies of these discs. But that's not what I'm looking for.

I want the original uncut, un-CGI'd films on DVD. Just like the ones that were originally reviewed in this thread.

I wouldn't be opposed to somebody making that information available again.

i haven't read those reviews in a while...but i have NEVER watched those original versions all teh way through. I know the quality is NOT that good...and Empire and Jedi are littered with audio sync problems. Too too bad.

Now the SE discs....those are GRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT

I have these discs and can say they are decent enough. Until GL gets off his high horse and does this release, I will be content with the bootlegs. I also have a version of the Phantom Menace(CGI crap!) that has a DTS track on it. Sounds pretty good. I winder if this is also just prologic?

if you consider sync problems "decent" then more power to you....but it is annoying to me. Very obvious.

I'd prefer the SE's anyday.

Plus the sound ain't so hot. The laserdisc had a great transfer and this version tried to mess with that by having it be 5.1.

They did a much better job with the SE's. Maybe someday whomever is doing these transfers to DVD will get everything right: 5.1 with NO sync problems (on SE's) and Prologic with NO sync problems on the original.

These were just another release in a LONG line of bootlegs that have come out for the trilogy. Here's hoping someone down the line will do it well.

For now...the SE's are GREAT.

Please remember that the only reason this thread stays open is because this kind of information is not posted, but also not asked for.

Well, I recently just purchased the Widescreen THX non-SE Trilogy on VHS. I got what I thought was a pretty good deal at around $30. I had briefly considered getting the DVD “bootlegs,” but ultimately decided against it.

However, after reading the reviews here, I am beginning to wonder if I made a mistake. I am surprised that most here have stated that the quality is pretty good. Nonetheless, I still find myself wondering if it is worth “upgrading” from the VHS tapes.

So is it? Perhaps I should just focus on getting A New Hope, since Episode V (and VI?) supposedly have “sync” problems. Any advice and/or opinions are much appreciated.

A lot of people have said it and I'll say it again...get the laserdiscs. If you're looking to get the trilogy...especially the original versions...then get the THX certified versions of the original. They can't be beat.

I'm all for the bootlegs, trust me. But the quality of the first group is just not up to par.

Then again...i'm one of the VERY few who prefer the Special Editions to the original versions...so what do i know?

I have a couple questions for those who already have the DVD's. What type/size TV's are you viewing these on? The reason I ask is what looks good on a 36" TV (Analog or Digital) can a lot of times look horrible on a 58" HDTV (which I have).

Also anyone in the Chicagoland area own these and willing to come out to Buffalo Grove so I can see how they look on my setup? I'll provide some Pizza for your troubles. I obviously don't want to watch all of them but watch a few scenes from each one to see i I want to buy copies.

if you own any non-anamorphic DVDs that were simply LD transfers slapped on a DVD (like True Lies, Backdraft, Sneakers, Usual Suspects orig. release, Stargate) use those as a starting point, then add quite a bit of DVNR (so less detailed) and that's what you can expect. I think with your TV you'll be disappointed with even the best ones that are out there. Are they a step up from VHS - certainly; Are they as good as the LDs they were sourced from - not quite. The best way to decide of course is defintiely to preview if possible

I already have the LD versions of the Star Wars Trilogy (both the THX Theatrical and the Special Editions) but with a LD you need to use you TV's zoom function (I have a 16x9 HDTV) to achieve the correct aspect ratio and that is what makes them not look very good! But I have the Panasonic RP91 that takes Non-Anamorphic DVD's and scales them internally/Digitally and makes Non-Anamorphic DVD's look FAR better then using the HDTV's zoom function so I am curious if this DVD might look better then the LD's because of the DVD players special ability. I am speaking of the Star Wars: SE DVD's that is which I hear is much better because of it's source material being better to start with. I did just grab the Empire Strikes Back:SE DVD tonight just to see myself how it looks and if it's not as good as the LD's I'll just sell it off.

well when you add in the TV's raster stretching vs the RP91's scaling, that could tip the scales in favor of the DVD. But I'd just get an iscan pro or something for the LD player unless you're only keeping it around for star wars

An iScan pro would do know good because it can not scale the video like the RP91 and would leave me with either a progressive image that I can not zoom (Pioneer HDTV locks in full when fed a PS signal) or I would be left with a Interlaced signal that still will look bad hen zoomed in with.

I don't frequent DVD Talk as much as I used to and I come back today to find that a thread I started almost a year ago (04-08-01) is still alive and doing quite well considering the subject matter.

Isn't that what the PVR is for? I record O'Reilly every night and then watch it in about a half hour by skipping all those commercials. Of course, I do that with all TV programs now.
