Best Film of 1977 (ongoing survey)
A quick note:
I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative. This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1977 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice. Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun. Please start your post with your #1 film from 1977 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome! Current Leader -- Star Wars All Years: 2000 -- Requiem For a Dream* 1999 -- Fight Club* 1998 -- (currently) Saving Private Ryan 1997 -- (currently) Boogie Nights 1996 -- Fargo* 1995 -- (currently) Braveheart 1994 -- Pulp Fiction* 1993 -- Schindler's List* 1992 -- Unforgiven* 1991 -- Silence of the Lambs* 1990 -- Goodfellas* 1989 -- Do the Right Thing* 1988 -- Die Hard* 1987 -- Full Metal Jacket* 1986 -- (currently) Ferris Bueller's Day Off 1985 -- Back to the Future* 1984 -- (currently) Ghostbusters 1983 -- Return of the Jedi* 1982 -- (currently) Blade Runner 1981 -- Raiders of the Lost Ark* 1980 -- (currently) Empire Strikes Back 1979 -- Apocalypse Now* 1978 -- (currently) The Deer Hunter 1977 -- Star Wars* 1976 If you haven't voted on the previous years, feel free to go back and do so. *Poll closed, winner declared. |
Not that we don't already know the winner, BUT my votes goes to...
1) Close Encounters of the Third Kind - 9/10 2) That Obscure Object of Desire The only other '77 film I've seen is something about warring stars or something like that... Ebert: 1) 3 Women 2) Providence 3) The Late Show 4) A Woman's Decision 5) Jail Bait 6) Close Encounters of the Third Kind 7) Aguirre: Wrath of God 8) Annie Hall 9) Sorcerer 10) Star Wars Siskel: 1) Annie Hall 2) The Late Show 3) In the Realm of the Senses 4) Close Encounters of the Third Kind 5) Saturday Night Fever 6) Harlan County, U.S.A. 7) Star Wars 8) Oh, God! 9) Pumping Iron 10) Rolling Thunder |

I'm gonna have to go with That Obscure Object of Desire.

I suppose Star Wars is a foregone conclusion.
It's a pity that other deserving films from that year won't be recognized. Films like Kingdom of the Spiders starring William Shatner, The Happy Hooker Goes to Washington with Adam West, and David Cronenberg's Rabid starring Marilyn Chambers. Great performances will go unnoticed. Like Evel Knievel portraying Evel Knievel in Viva Knievel!, or Muhammad Ali as Muhammad Ali in The Greatest. It's really sad to think that movies like The Car and Orca are long forgotten while some movie that had to play in theaters for over a year in order to gain a following gets all the glory. So, just to buck the trend, I'm voting for Spielberg's Close Encounters, followed by Mel Brook's High Anxiety, and Hal Needham's Smokey and the Bandit. |
Star Wars
For better or worse, the impact of this movie is still felt 25 years later. |
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
-edit- Thanks monkey, how could I forget Annie Hall? I'd say a tie between these two. |
EASY choice.
Annie Hall |

Star Wars

Although I think Close Encounters was a more intelligent film, I'd have to go with Star Wars. Such a huge impact...
|
A no brainer -- Close Encounters of the Third Kind
|
Very easy:
STAR WARS! |
Star Wars

Star Wars

Star Wars

Even though there are technically better films, Star Wars has it. It's impact is a cultural phenomenon.
|
Another vote for That Obscure Object of Desire, even though I love Eraserhead and Annie Hall just as much.
Star Wars may have the "cultural impact" but it's not as good as those films by Bunuel, Lynch, and Allen. And frankly, Annie Hall has had its own cultural impact. |
Star Wars.. no question about it..
|
Eraserhead
IMO, there is no other answer. |
Star Wars
