Getting before my time as well (only 8 in 1983)...so my favorites from that year are:
1. National Lampoon's Vacation
2. Return of the Jedi
3. Strange Brew
4. A Christmas Story
5. Scarface

Er...yeah. I can see that the films being picked in these surveys are now becoming more and more childish. ROTJ a great film? Harrison Ford's acting alone prevents it from being that. Get serious, people.

j/k
Yeah, I definitely agree that with ROTJ probably winning this one and then other recent winners like Ghostbusters and Ferris Bueller's Day Off even - we know they're not great films, but they definitely have their fans... and if that's what these polls end of showing, then so be it.
And just because they aren't all great films (at least, according to me
), a lot of these are films that people come back to a lot and/or are sentimental favorites. I think with the 70s coming up, we'll see a lot of truly great films winning again, but hey, we'll see how it goes. Who knows, maybe crap like Star Wars will continue to win
Just kidding about that last part

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing.
This is a poll for the BEST picture of the year. If ROTJ was the best picture of that year, cinema died over 20 years ago.
