Best Film of 1994 (ongoing survey)

I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.

This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1994 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice.

Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun.

Please start your post with your #1 film from 1994 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome!

Current Leader -- Pulp Fiction

All Years:
2000 -- Requiem For a Dream*
1999 -- Fight Club*
1998 -- (currently) Saving Private Ryan
1997 -- (currently) Boogie Nights
1996 -- Fargo*
1995 -- (currently) Braveheart
1994 -- Pulp Fiction*
1993 -- Schindler's List*
1992 -- Unforgiven*
1991 -- Silence of the Lambs*
1990 -- Goodfellas*
1989 -- (currently) Do the Right Thing
1988 -- Die Hard*
1987 -- Full Metal Jacket*
1986 -- (currently) Ferris Bueller's Day Off
1985 -- Back to the Future*
1984 -- (currently) Ghostbusters
1983 -- Return of the Jedi*
1982

If you haven't voted on the previous years, feel free to go back and do so.

*Poll closed, winner declared.

The Shawshank Redemption

IMHO, this barely beats out the film that's sure to be neck and neck with it in the poll -- Pulp Fiction, of course.

For the record, they're both on my top ten of all time.

The rest of my top ten of '94:
3) Forrest Gump
4) Natural Born Killers
5) The Last Seduction
6) Leon: The Professional
7) Naked
8) Quiz Show
9) The Cement Garden
10) Dumb & Dumber

Grim, I'm gonna cheat and add rouge to 93 and collectively
just say that the trilogy is the best film of 93...
I know rude, but they were all probably made back to back anyway. I like blue more than red for some reason.

Or perhaps I could say they were the best of 94, since they were all playing in theaters in 1994 at some point.
But then again 1993 was kinda weak. I'm confused now.

I go by each film's individual merits, because otherwise what will prevent others to say "The Godfather Trilogy" and "Star Wars Trilogy"?

BTW, all three films came out in 1994 in the US - Bleu in Feb 94, Blanc in June 94, and Rouge in December 94. I went with "Rouge" because it is my favorite.

Nice List, Sunday. Is there a consensus on the Three Colors Trilogy? Rouge was released Dec '94, so I'm sticking with that for now.

Since I doubt all four of these will be near the top, I'll list them all and you can pick one or spilt two. I just can't decide.

Naked
Three Colors: Red
Savage Nights
Shawkshank Redemption

I genuinely shocked that I'm the first person to say Pulp Fiction.

Well, I accidentally voted for something that got a lot of votes in 1995, so I'll try again:

Ed Wood

Pulp Fiction. It's one of those rare films that's actually grown in stature to me - I watch it once a year or so and still find it fresh, inventive and funny with Samuel Jackson as the baddest muthafoocha there ever was. Shawshank is overrated to me, IMHO I prefer the original short story to the movie which is capable and wonderfully acted but not particularly innovative.

JT - Keep these threads coming, I think they're wayyyy better than the silly "polls" we have, they're much more free-form. I even surprise myself, I really thought "American Beauty" was my favorite film of '99 but when I posted in the thread and thought about it, "Being John Malkovich" suddenly became my favorite. These are the best threads we've had on here for some time about movie merits, if you ask me...

Pulp Fiction

(I am not familiar with Blue, White, Red as they are not out on DVD and I can't remember films I watched 7 years ago anymore.

What is so great about pulp fiction is that it is nothing like
the shawshank redemption.

chungking was made in 94, released in the states in 96...
so it qualifies as a 1996 release.

Well, that's informative. I was hoping for a more detailed description of what people liked so much about Pulp Fiction. I didn't hate it but I didn't think it was all that special. For the people who didn't like Shawshank: Why? Once again, just curious. Shawshank is one of those I can watch a million times and never get sick of it. I love the characters and everything about it.
