Best Film of 1996 (ongoing survey)
I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.
This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1996 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice. Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun. Please start your post with your #1 film from 1996 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome! Current Leader -- Fargo All Years: 2000 -- Requiem For a Dream 1999 -- (currently) American Beauty 1998 -- (currently) Thin Red Line 1997 -- (currently) Boogie Nights 1996 -- Fargo 1995 If you haven't voted on the previous years, feel free to go back and do so. |
Fargo
My other 10/10 - Bound |
Fargo
|
Two of the best films of the decade:
Chungking Express and Breaking the Waves |
Another vote for Fargo.
|
Breaking the Waves, with Fargo not far behind.
|
Call me crazy, but I'm gonna skirt thin ice and go against the Coen Bros. stretch and say Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet. :)
|
It would help on these threads if you state which ones (at least the majors) qualified, since they may stretch across years.
But this one's easy: Fargo |
Fargo

Has to be Fargo.

Keep on going with these "best of the year" threads. I really enjoy them.
My best of 1996 is easily: FARGO English Patient would be #2. |
In my trend of picking what no one else will pick ...
Secrets & Lies das |
Let me surprise everyone here:

Without a doubt... Fargo.
HMs to Sling Blade and Trainspotting. |

Runner-ups: Trainspotting People vs. Larry Flynt Swingers Hard Eight Freeway |
Throw in another vote for Fargo :)
|
Whoa! My top two are:
The Rock Primal Fear Thats right baby.......Welcome to the ROCK! |
1. Jerry Maguire
2. Trainspotting |
Jerry Ma(*******)guire.
Second best movie ever. |
Fargo
Hard Eight People vs. Larry Flynt Flirting With Disaster |
A very tough decision but I too narrowly have to go with "Jerry Maguire" over "Fargo."
|
12 Monkeys
|
Well, I'm of the opinion that 1996 wasn't a real great year. Fargo easily wins my vote. I gave Fargo a 10 and Shine a 9.
I haven't seen Dead Man, Hamlet, Hard Eight, Secrets & Lies, Breaking the Waves, Flirting with Disaster, or When We Were Kings. I'd also like to find a way to see Microcosmos. Others of note for me were Cable Guy, P vs Larry Flynt, Scream, Bottle Rocket, Last Man Standing, Primal Fear, Swingers, and Guffman. Heck, Eraser or Happy Gilmore is probably in my top 10 for that year! The movies that I saw and disliked the most were Diabolique, Chain Reaction, Spy Hard, Stealing Beauty, Isl of Dr. Moreau, and Joe's Apartment. Barry |
Tie between Island of Dr Moreau and Fargo
|
1. Trainspotting
2. Jerry Maguire Fargo, in my humble opinion, is highly over-rated and easily one of my least favourite films of that year. That being said, I'm obviously in the minority on this one! -matt |
No doubt about it, Fargo
|
With a long dry spell, I figured I'd go ahead and add it up, and as you can easily tell, Fargo has run away with it with 14 Votes.
1) Fargo (14) 2) Jerry Maguire (5) 3) English Patient (3) 4) Breaking the Waves (2.5) The 1995 Thread is now open. |
Has to be Eraser or maybe Independence Day :D
I guess my vote would go to Hamlet followed by Fargo and Evita. |
