Wow. My official vote goes to The Sweet Hereafter. I had no idea that so many other than myself thought it was the best film that year. Not only the best film about a vehicle crashing and sinking into icy waters but the very best film.

My favorites from 1997:
Titanic (I can't belive it's been 4 years!!!)
Gattaca (Jude Law was great in an excellent sci-fi movie)
Kolya
Ponette (I can't believe this child actress didn't walk away with several acting awards)
Boogie Nights
Shall We Dance? (Japan)
Contact
Ice Storm (Ang Lee)

I bought the Sweet Hereafter based on all those picking it as the best of the year.
Glad I did. Don't know how I missed this one in theaters. I really enjoyed it. Not my favorite of the year, but it is certainly a must own/ not to be missed movie with some gripping scenes and great cinematogrophy.
Thanks for clueing me in to this great film.
