Anime on DVD: The Guide to Anime (ver 2.0)

Ok - thanks to bigjim25, we now have the guide in a table. Yay - this should be easier on the eyes hopefully. Also - thanks to Eigeman, I figured out how to post it without looking bad. Please give feedback on what changes you would like me to make or if you like it the way it is now. Or even if you liked it before. I'm still doing updates - but I need more input from you all. If you posted some previously that haven't appeared - please post them again. See the rules below before posting your contributions please

Welcome to The Guide to Anime. This is a list of Anime titles broken up into genres. Many people want to get into anime, but don't know where to start. Perhaps they've rented a few titles and liked one, but subsequent titles didn't live up to it. Perhaps some people want to avoid anime with lots of violence or perhaps that's exactly what they want. Somebody looking for a little humor? Here's where all the anime is categorized so you can find something that suits your taste. I've spent a great deal of time on this list (with help from many other forum members), so I hope it is of some use to you!

Contributions
Please feel free to contribute. If you are going to contribute, please do the following:
1. Give the Title of the Anime
2. Classify the anime using between 2 and 4 categories. The most dominant theme is first followed by second most dominant and so on.
3. Tell me whether it's an OVA, TV Series or a Movie.
4. Give me your rating of it on a scale of one to ten. *See Below
5. Finally - tell me if it's available on DVD or not.

Also - Feel free to rate any from the list above and/or suggest category changes. All contributions will be recognized. Those who have helped out are noted below. Thank you!

*When rating - please be fair and base your rating on the films own merits. Try not to rate an anime about giant robots if you hate anime about giant robots... stick with rating animes of the genres you are partial to. Please don't try to alter a film's overall score by giving it a higher or lower mark than it actually deserves just because it's your favorite or you hated it. This might be hard to do, but I think the ratings will be a bit more accurate if we do it this way. I'd like to say only rate films you thought were watchabe or good, and try to refrain from giving zeros just because you hated a movie, but I won't... Just try to be honest and base your ratings on the plot, the art, the animation, the quality of the transfer (to a small degree only), acting, and of course whether or not you liked it. Try not to factor in hype in your ratings - also try not to factor in fanservice.

I appreciate all your input... I think this will be a helpful guide to those who are new to anime or to those who already love it and want more!

Thanks...

Some corrections, updates, fill-in-the-blanks, etc (Yeah, call me picky...)

T/X Serial Experiments Lain

-Is incorrectly catagorized--TV series, it is not an OAV.

D/K Barefoot Gen

-the DVD release is only partial (with no set plans for the rest of the series, due to liscencing issues)

Video Girl Ai - D/H/G/F - OVA - 8 - Not on DVD yet

This one is about a depressed teenager, Yota who's in love with his friend Moemi, but she's in love with his other friend Takeshi. He rents a video tape and a girl, Ai, comes out of the TV screen to help him get together with Moemi. Because she's from a video tape, there's only a short amount of time before the tape runs out and she returns to where she came from.

I really liked this one, but found the last episode disappointing. On the whole, I really enjoyed this series and would buy it if it came out on DVD. The characters were very likable, the story was interesting and the humour was quite funny. I know this is for girls, but I'd much rather watch stuff like this than another giant robot series.

Cowboy Bebop was a hybrid TV/OVA show. Some episodes (13 I believe) were released on TV while the remaining episodes were released as OVAs.

El Hazard: The Magnificent World was an OVA.

El Hazard: The Magnificent World 2 was a sequel to the first OVA (and is also an OVA).

El Hazard: The Wanderers (which is unlisted) is a TV series.

El Hazard: The Alternative World was a TV show, not an OVA.

El Hazard: The Mysterious World does not exist. There are currently only 4 EH titles (listed above).

Bastard! was an OVA.

Sol Bianca (all iterations) were OVAs.

Queen Emeraldas was an OVA.

(multiple edits because of additions, sorry!)

Just a note, Mystery of Mamo (Lupin III) really sucked I really LOVED Castle of Caligostro, but the tone and humor of MoM is totally different. Lupin is much much much more of a sex-pervert and the story is quite bad. I'd give it a 2.

It is OOP, but I rented it from netflix.com awhile back...

If it helps, here's my review (for DVDTalk) of the Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight Box Set:

The ratings in the table - are they averages from many people's votes?

If so, then they really need to also have the number of votes (as in IMDB).

In other words,

9 (125)

means a much better film than

9 (3)

That's a good idea... but these rating averages range from between 1 and 7 people. If more people would rate, I'd have to come up with a better system and I'd probably impliment that idea. Good call though. I'll look into it.

What about making a webpage? It would be a lot easier and less constrictive. You could link to the page from the post and have the voting thing there done through CGI or something so you wouldn't have to count all the votes.

That explains a lot.

Given that, I would drop the ratings column altogether until the average was at least 20 votes.

A number of things in the list that many people consider amongst the best anime ever, are rated lower than other things which I've never seen one person claim was amongst the best.

In other words, the ratings above seem quite different than the impression one gets from reading a lot of threads and reviews.

Time
Money
Already a million Anime sites that rate Anime

I thought this would be somewhat unique and I'd keep it here for everyone until I had the Time and the Money to do a site... The problem with rating is that if left alone to it, people would try to make their favorite the #1 or something - I've seen it and it's lame. People either vote 1 or 10 - rarely inbetween... and they've only seen like 2 animes. I think with the way I'm asking for ratings - I'm getting fairly accurate scores from people in our little tiny web based community. People aren't rating 1 or 10 here usually and most people who have submitted ratings have seen tons of anime. I have discarded one or two ratings when it's clearly the only anime they've seen or else they are just trying to boost the "score" of their favorite anime. It's not entirely accurate and consists of objective opinions narrowed down to a number "score" - you can disregard it if you don't find it useful, but I think they've been pretty accurate for me when picking stuff to buy or watch.

I prefer this method to some sites that LOVE every anime that comes along - AnimeonDVD is a great site and all, but they rate almost every anime as a B+ or A except for a few cult favorites like say Fist of the NorthStar or something which many people love and they'll give it an F or something.

As long as people remain honest about the way they score using the guidelines I laid out - the scores should come out fairly accurate... as accurate as opinions can be anyway -

Well said, and I totally agree with your handling of ratings.

Patlabor TV is out. You can change the "On DVD?" to YES. I'd also like to rate it as a 9.

Still waiting for more input from all of you before doing an update. I recently got JinRoh on DVD and will watch it when I get a chance.

Agreed. The current ratings system could be viewed as a bit misleading. Seven data points doesn't really mean all that much. I'm unsure as to exactly how many would be meaningful (need a 'bio-statistician), but it's gotta be higher than seven. A data set that small *could* be meaningful, if there was a mechanism to get a review posted along with the rating. Then you might stand a chance of understanding a bit about the movie, and the person that rated it.

But - by the time you've gotten reviews, etc in there, ya may as well be doing another 'anime on DVD' page. And it's obvioiusly not the answer. Maybe a long, painfull, series of polls on some of these films.

It'd be a pain, but it could be made to happen.

1: Lose all the ratings
2: One at a time, run a poll to get a film rated. (it'd probably take 2 polls per film as I don't think you can do 10 per poll)
3: After each poll, post the average along with the participant count.

As a side benefit - it'd give you something to take care of in all that copious free time you've got laying around.

Millenium Actress (Satoshi Kon) D/F, 9, Not on DVD.

Synopsis:

Genya Tachibana is a director and the president of a small production company. One day, he is contacted by the famous Gin Ei studios, that ask him to direct a documentary commemorating their 70 years of existence. Genya chooses as a subject the legendary actress Chiyoko Fujiwara, a superstar actress who 30 years earlier chose to end her career and disappear from public life. Chiyoko Fujiwara is a cinematographic enigma that nobody ever seemed to shed light on. Genya is obsessed by this fallen star, wanting to unravel the truth behind her secret. Accompanied by a young cameraman, Genya finds his way to Chiyoko, who has transformed into an elderly hermit living alone in an isolated house. At their first meeting, Genya sees that Chiyoko, although touched by the hand of time, has not lost any of her charm or energy. To gain her confidence, he brings her an ancient key that holds sentimental value, that rapidly allows Chiyoko to begin recounting her memories. The interview takes course, and our 3 protagonists are plunged into the past, visiting each fragment of what has been long gone, where the past and present meld together. The actress’ recollections soon metamorphosize into a great adventure where cinema confronts her history and an incredible love is unveiled, that conflicted with her rather uncommon lifestyle…

Review:

I was fortunate enough to attend the world premiere of Satoshi Kon's (Perfect Blue) latest film Millenium Actress at our Fantasia Film Fest. I am by no means an anime expert since I've only been introduced to the genre recently but I sincerely believe this is an outstanding film. Since I could not have said it better myself, let me quote a local reviewer:

"The most admirable aspect of the film is clearly the manner in which it seamlessly passes from one era to another (portraying in consequence the different historical periods that marked Japan during the 20th Century) all while retracing the different movie genres that passed through them (the film follows the career of the actress all while recreating the most famous scenes she acted in). The result comes across like a passionate, timeless homage to cinema, and a moral lesson for those (there are many in Japan and around the world), who frequently forget too easily."

The film received the Best Animation Film award.

I don't consider all the effort I've put into this as being "meaningless"... If you don't like the ratings - then don't pay attention to them - simple as that. To be honest with you, I'm done taking suggestions as to what I should or shouldn't change about the way it's laid out. If you don't like it - get your information elsewhere... I've spent many hours working on this - too many to take criticism like this. I just wanted to make a helpful guide/list that people interested in Anime could check out - it's an alternative to AnimeonDVD.com or whatever other Anime site there is. I gathered all the info from other DVDTalk members and nothing from other Anime sites.

AnimeonDVD.com only has 1 or 2 reviews for most titles... my problem with them is that they seem to love pretty much everything. Don't trust the ratings here if you don't want to - I don't care, but I'm not removing anything and I'm not running polls. I've requested scores from people with the stipulation that they only review titles from genres that they are interested in and that they give honest scores. I find the results to be pretty accurate - I've seen many titles from this list based on the scores and have felt about the same way about them. Surely you can see that people who like Giant Robot anime might agree with a 10 for Gundam, while someone not so hot on Mecha would disagree. That's the purpose of the categories combined with the scores. Of course - taste is subjective and scores may vary from person to person... but I'm not interested in your or anyone else's opinion of my current scoring system because quite honestly, I find it somewhat insulting.

For starters, I'm very sorry and never once meant to insult you. You've done a good job, and one nobody else has. But I also never said that all the effort that you've put into this is meaningless.
