trigun 6 disc set

Does anyone know about the Trigun 6disc dvd sets being sold on Ebay? They don't look like bootlegs since they have those special clear cases- but I dunno. Does anyone know if the english subtitles on these discs are ok/same as the ones on the 8disc R1 release?

Thanx in advance!

I'm lazy - provide a link...

however - clear cases can be purchased anywhere. Doesn't ensure that they are not bootlegs. I'd have to see them. So link us up.

Just got Akira

I just recieved my copy of Akira today. I got the LE Tin and it's a pretty nice case, IMO. It's slightly larger than a regular case, but not by much. It's hinged and opens up with a DVD in each side. The inside looks like the Sapranos and Fushigi Yugi boxes. It has the clear holders for both discs. The menus are simple, but nice and the transfer is really good. I haven't watched the English dub yet, but the Japanese track sounded good. The second disc has a bunch of extras, including trailers, documentaries, and some stuff on the restoration. I'd say this is a really good buy. I won't be surprised if this gets picked as best anime DVD release of the year. Pioneer did a really nice job.

Almost positive it's a bootleg. I've never heard of a Hong Kong Trigun release with English subs (and, if it's legitimate, it'd be all over the place). It's not region coded, and the same seller is definately selling bootlegs of other popular series, so the chances of it being a legal release get even slimmer.

While I am rather surprised at the lengths bootleggers go these days to appear legal, this isn't the first time I've seen the fold-out-case style used (I think the first time I saw it was with Fushigi Yuugi...). I'm not looking forward to the day it becomes impossible to distinguish illegal copies from the originals.

Nah - that's not a bootleg. That's badass! I wouldn't believe it's all region - probably Region 2 NTSC. Sounds like a Japanese SE set. I'd get it if it was Cowboy Bebop. It could be a bootleg I suppose, but I doubt it. Bootlegs are usually cheaply made and this looks like quality. I have no proof though. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd look at some Japanese sites to find the same thing... I did a little bit of searching and came up with nothing though...

Sweet though. Nobody has bid on it - that's crazy. I might have to pick it up myself.

Lokknez 07-15-01 09:55 AM

Its not a bootleg people. Its the Japanese release of the series. They're sold in eBay because the nipponese use NTSC and most their stuff is region free. I've bought from this guy before and his stuff is good (I bought Vandread, Spriggan and Bebop).

dani-wan 07-15-01 01:24 PM

thanks for the replies everyone.. Still, has any one seen this version and can compare it to the R1 release?

PhoenixFlame 07-15-01 03:25 PM

I'm 95% certain that the Trigun box set IS a bootleg.

Reason #1 - The guy is shipping from Hong Kong. Taiwan and Hong Kong are bootleg centrals ^_^;

Reason #2 - Chinese subtitles. It's possible that Japanese DVDs ship with English subtitles, but NOT Chinese. The Japanese do not cater anime directly to the Chinese market.

Reason #3 - Six DVD's for $48.99. Japanese DVD's sell for about $30+ a pop as previously mentioned, because of quality and production values.

Reason #4 - I do not believe there is a Trigun boxset available in the Japanese market. CD Japan and Amotokyo both only have up to volume 7 available.

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/search.html...n&restrict=DVD

http://www.amotokyo.com/default.asp?...dia=DVD&navi=7

Furthermore, from my experience with Japanese Jrock DVD's, they are all Region 2 - not region free.

To be blunt, this is just not true. The Japanese release is 7 individual discs spanning 26 episodes), without any form of English or Chinese at all--pure Japanese, region 2 encoded. The odds of a companyremastering all the discs to add subtitles in English (and Chinese, but not Japanese), and compact it down to six discs are pretty slim. The odds of them doing this and then not selling through any form of online source, are pretty much nonexistant. And there is *no* way that they'd sell the boxes for that cheap (The regular R2 release rings in at about 400 bucks). Add in the fact that not even the most avid R2 importers seem to have heard of the thing (I asked around), and there's pretty much no chance that it's the Japanese release.

All the evidence points to this being a bootleg. The location is Hong Kong, which knocks it into the suspect range (HK being one of the major bootleg sources). Most of this seller's stock is highly suspect, and more than one title is a known bootleg. The main argument against it's being a bootleg is the apparent quality--And even that's not as good a sign as it used to be. Bootlegs are getting much 'nicer' than they used to be, and ebay is the easiest way to distribute them. I'd give it around 15% odds of being a legal Hong Kong release (I admit that I'm not as familiar with HK releases as with most other places), 85% at bootleg based on the available information.

^^^BUMPING UP^^^

Everyone needs to watch Nadia on DVD. :)

The Eigeman 07-18-01 03:07 PM

Speaking of Akira Tin Case...now that there are pics abound of what the inside case looks like, that seems more reminiscent of what the Japanese Tin case looks like, because Japanese Tin Cases usually are hinged, so they open up like a book, albeit some are smaller (almost CD size) but the Japanese Tins are sweet w/ tons of extras usually since they are limited releases most of the times.

Re: Bootlegs

Most of the anime sold on Ebay coming direct from Hong Kong are bootleg versions. There are no official sponsored direct anime importers or licensed anime companies in Hong Kong. If they were, they would have the official "JASRAC" sticker on each item. If they do not have the JASRAC logo or sticker on them, they are illegal (although bootleggers can imitate it and put it on the cover art). The reason is being thus, Japan knows China, HK and Taiwan have huge bootlegging centrals. The only way to distinguish bootlegs and legal copies are by 1) the companies producing the CD, VCD or DVD, 2) the label stickers and logos. Any of these mediums officially sponsored by Japan's studio will all have and contain the JASRAC logo sticker (it looks like a Microsoft sticker, the earlier stickers). These stickers are necessary to be placed and are given to legit companies selling legit Japanese sponsored CD, VCD, or DVD.

How to tell if it is a bootleg or an official legit copy sponsored by the Japanese company, IF there is no JASRAC sticker...don't look at the cover, those are easy to produce and replicate, but silk-screening on the CD, VCD or DVD is expensive no matter where you do it. Bootleggers want to make money so they keep the silkscreening to a monochrome color...like black fonts, and that's it... Legit companies will do more colors and do a whole new design and/or full color silk screening press to make it. In addition, HK, and Taiwan legit CD/VCD/DVDs are like 60% of the original Japanese price tag...so if the Japanese CD is $30, then the legit Asian copy is like $18 (or close thereof).

In addition to the DVDs, Japanese do not appreciate compressing too much into one disc...all real licenses recommend that the episodes be spread out over several volumes rather than compressing a lot into one volume...so if you see anything that has like 7-9 episodes per DVD, then it's a bootleg.

The Trigun one looks like an officially licensed but we have to check what is on the cover (yes, officially licensed HK and Taiwan DVD/VCD also contain Chinese subs) and the DVD themselves.

Now, I know that Singapore has legit Japanese sponsored anime (and some bootlegs), but the Boys Be which has English subs on them comes in 4 volumes, which sounds about right for an official licensed anime...now if it came in 2 volumes iwth 6-8 episodes per DVD, then you would have something to worry about.

UB News:

Latest word has it that Urban Vision will release the new movie to U.S. theaters in September 2001, with a home video release to follow (currently slated for December). The December 2000 issue of Animation World has an article by Fred Patten on the new movie; this mentions release plans as well as giving a little background on the making of the movie. Articles on the movie have also appeared in the paper publications Animerica vol. 9, no. 1 and Protoculture Addicts 63.

vinhj 07-18-01 05:15 PM

If you're asking whether Kenshin is part of the shoujo genre, it's not. While the first season is light hearted and kind of silly sometimes, the second season (referred to as the shishio/kyoto arc or some variation thereof) is the best part of the series. It has some amazing fights and is just generally high on the 'wow' factor.

The 'Legend of Kyoto' begins on v7 of the DVDs if you're interested in checking it out.

Where? Link or post. I wanna see before it arrives in a 2-10 days. Or if anyone's seen the new Tin at Best Buy or somewhere, tell us if they indeed look like the Anchor Bay Tins as some have reported or if they look like the hinged one I posted a picture of in the first post. Just a confirmation is all I need. Do they have the standard amaray inside or just a jewel case or what?

Trigun Vol. #8 is already out. I got mine long time ago. I have no idea who is sending out yours but it was already released.

As for Vampire Hunter D 2000, it will be released domestically after the theatrical run in the U.S.. But before the domestic R1 DVD can come out, the R2 DVD has to come out first, so that may delay the R1 DVD some more. R2 DVD should be coming out soon.

Rurouni Kenshin is a story about a master-less samurai assassin, Kenshin. Definitely not shoujo because the manga the anime is based off of is shounen. There are 91 episodes + 1 episode not aired on TV, PLUS 1 OVA series and 1 movie. The R2 DVD boxset looks sweet...the cover design is so gorgeous. :) The R2 DVD Boxset will come in 3 parts, the first box will be sold in September and will be limited edition (as will the other two boxsets).

FOr those interested in to see what the art of the boxset for R2 DVD for Kenshin is, here it is:

As for City Hunter 2 DVD box, the last count at ADV Fansubs was at 490 something...we need to get 1500 more signatures...we need to start promoting this boxset so that it will be cheap for us all. :)

Trigger, check out my earlier post. It's the fourth one down on the last page. I got my Akira Tin last weekend. Here are some links to a couple of pictures somebody at www.animeondvd.com posted in a thread, http://www.ctips.com/~mystic/101-0193_IMG.JPG http://www.ctips.com/~mystic/101-0194_IMG.JPG. It's a picture of the case closed and open. He's got the insert standing up behind the case.

Trigger 07-20-01 02:43 AM

Yeah - thanks... I knew it wasn't gonna be like the AB tins. That's great news... looks pretty sweet too.

Trigger 07-27-01 07:18 AM

Well I got my Akira set and it's better than I imagined it. Wow! I know there are plenty of Akira threads, so whatever...

Anyway... just bumping this since the anime threads are starting to pop up... :)

eXcentris 07-27-01 12:13 PM

Nothing to do with DVD but I post this here since it could be of interest to anime fans.

Tomorrow evening, I will be attending the world premiere (Fantasia Film Fest) of Millenium Actress, hosted by director Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue).
I could post a review afterwards but it woudn't mean much since I've only seen two anime films (Princess Mononoke and Ghost In The Shell) so far. :)

Anyway, here's the synopsis for those interested:

Genya Tachibana is a director and the president of a small production company. One day, he is contacted by the famous Gin Ei studios, that ask him to direct a documentary commemorating their 70 years of existence. Genya chooses as a subject the legendary actress Chiyoko Fujiwara, a superstar actress who 30 years earlier chose to end her career and disappear from public life. Chiyoko Fujiwara is a cinematographic enigma that nobody ever seemed to shed light on. Genya is obsessed by this fallen star, wanting to unravel the truth behind her secret. Accompanied by a young cameraman, Genya finds his way to Chiyoko, who has transformed into an elderly hermit living alone in an isolated house. At their first meeting, Genya sees that Chiyoko, although touched by the hand of time, has not lost any of her charm or energy. To gain her confidence, he brings her an ancient key that holds sentimental value, that rapidly allows Chiyoko to begin recounting her memories. The interview takes course, and our 3 protagonists are plunged into the past, visiting each fragment of what has been long gone, where the past and present meld together. The actress’ recollections soon metamorphosize into a great adventure where cinema confronts her history and an incredible love is unveiled, that conflicted with her rather uncommon lifestyle…

I basically broke my Anime cherry with Akira this week. I've had Gundam Wing Op1 but that was it. No comparison. Based on recommendations I picked up Cowboy Bebop 4 & 6 at the express.com sale for $14.99 ea.

I think the Akira craze will turn alot of people on to anime that would have otherwise not have. I'm guessing there couldn't have been a better title to have done so.

Just what I need another genre for my addiction.

Well, Rhino is going to be releasing the Battle of the Planets DVDs and is going to have the original, uncut Gatchaman episodes as "extras". I don't know much more info than that. I'm not sure if they are releasing all the uncut episodes or not. I heard they are releasing it this way because their license would not let them release the uncut episodes by themselves. We'll have to see how it goes once they release them, which I think is later this year.

Bruce 07-27-01 09:56 PM

Thanks for the info Ghym, I'm just not willing to buy a DVD for just 2 episodes. I want the whole series ;) Anyway, that would cost so freakin much that way......I wish there was a box set.

Thanks, already did that. BTW, great job on the threads.

Based on that info, it looks like I'm going to start shopping for the following:

Cowboy Bebop (4 & 6 already ordered, its probably better if I watch them in order huh?)
Gundam 0083
Samurai X
Gunsmith Cats
Serial Experiments Lain
Perfect Blue
Ghost In The Shell

Good start? Anything else you guys feel strongly about that I should check out? Box sets?

Excellent start - Except these changes... for now...

Perfect Blue
Cowboy Bebop
- yes, watch them in order. 6 discs
Ghost in the Shell
Princess Mononoke
Gunsmith Cats
Jubei Chan: Ninja Girl - Secret of the Lovely Eyepatch
4 discs.

That would be a good start.

Then get...

Gundam
Ninja Scroll
Serial Experiments Lain
Samurai X
OVA - 2 discs, also a 1 disc movie, also a several disc TV series. I have the OVA and the Movie - haven't watched the Movie, but the OVA was good (as long as you watch both discs).
Castle of Caligostro

That should keep you busy. Wanna get some more addictions? Head over to the International forum and get hooked on HK cinema - it's like crack. :)

Dexter 07-28-01 06:21 AM

1st comes Ninja Scroll then Ninja Resurrection what's next ?
behind the dvd cover it says Jubei will take out the 4 demons bla bla and I could'nt get to see what happens when Lord Sheros son is born as the Satan Returns so they're standing on top of the temple and it ends credit starts to scroll up :( and there was only 2 episodes on this DVD  so is there any other part ? damn adv :grunt: they charge alot and short time animes but I like their animes :D

Crazy Aoshi 07-28-01 12:17 PM

Wow, you liked Ninja Resurrection? It had nothing to do with Ninja Scroll. They were just trying to pass ot off as a sequel, bu their only connection is that they were based on the same mythalogical character (who is probably public domain). Anyway, I don't think Ninja Resurrection's ending was good either, I can't belive I wasted my money (and an hour of my life on that title. It was on my shelf for awhile until I watched it, then I promptly sold it.

tofu 07-28-01 12:41 PM

hey guys. have any of you ever seen "don't leave me alone daisy"? i just picked up the dvd set at express.com for $20 (which is a pretty good deal in my mind). I've love some opinions before i pop it into the player.

Crazy Aoshi 07-28-01 01:26 PM

Don't Leave Me Alone Daisy, I'd rank as average to below average. The art is mediocre, the story isn't that great, the characters are kinda uninteresting, I paid about $20 for mine. If I had paid $40, I would have been disappointed, but not for $20. If you want cheap boxed sets, I liked Haunted Junction more...

Trigger 07-28-01 02:02 PM

Just to remind everybody that www.bestprices.com has some of the best prices on Anime you'll find. They have a special deal with ADV I think cuz alot of their Anime titles are up to 44% off. Their anime is easily searchable too... check them out cuz they don't show up in price search engines or offer click incentives and just rely on word of mouth.

Liquid Death 07-28-01 02:11 PM

I saw Samurai X: The Motion Picture, and I was really disappointed. I *LOVED* the two Samurai X OVAs, but the tone of the movie is totally different, as is the animation. I heard it was alot closer to the series (Kenshin).

You also must watch Cowboy Bebop in order. Thats imperative ;)

I just had a Neon Genesis Evangelion marathon (watched discs 4-8 yesterday and today to finish it up) and I loved it...up until those last two trippy episodes. I think the series could've used a stronger and less confusing ending. I was also confused on a few things that I hope people who have seen the entire series can help me out with - I'll put them in spoiler tags.

Spoiler:
Did Misato kill Kaji, and if so, why? Because he knew too much?

Spoiler:
Did Ritsuko's mom kill Rei I and then she was killed and her brain put into the Magi? There's the outline of a body, so I assume thats how the mother died, but it makes sense if she killed Rei I as well - then Rei II would be the one who sacrificed herself to kill the angel in unit 0, and Rei III would be the one at the end?

Spoiler:
Is the "soul" in Unit 1 Shinji's mom? I might be off base on that one, but during the series, its revealed that all Evas have a soul, and Ikari is talking to Unit 1 near the end and refers to it as Yui.
