Has anyone received this yet? Is it any good? I ordered mine from amazon.fr and it shipped on 11/23

Mine also shipped on the 23rd and I received it today.

It's just the one disc and theres a booklet inside. Its supposed to be limited but its not individually numbered. Anyone know how many its limited to?

Packaging is nice but very big and flat. Dont know where I'm going to keep it.

As for the video, I havent looked yet.

I ordered this dic because I like the movie, but I don't actually know what it has for extras and I can't read French.

Could anyone tell me in English what the DVD has on it? Also, is the book that comes with the DVD in French or English?

Book is in French.

The DVD has 3 extras.

A doc about certain scenes (French only I believe)

A doc about the restoration (Havent really looked at this one)

And a promotional trailer (English)

Yeah, pity about the docus being in French.

Probably not worth getting the DVD if there's a R1 version in the works.

Hopefully its limited to 10 only and we have 2 of them :-)

- The restored movie in English, or English with French subtitles.

- "Image par Image" (Picture by Picture): a 42 min documentary on the making of Citizen Kane, a scene by scene analysis, special effects, musical score, etc...

- "L'Histoire d'un Mythe" (The Story of a Myth): a 9 min documentary about Orson Welles and Citizen Kane.

- Trailer (in English with French subtitles)

- Booklet: 16 pages featuring a biography and a filmography of Orson Welles.

...erm... actually, now you can:

The French mk2 label has just released the first five of an even dozen Truffaut films. These (will) contain:
- anamorphic transfer of the film
- introduction to each film
- running commentary for each film
- interviews, documentaries, photo gallery
- trailers
Now here's what's special: each disc will feature optional English subtitles for all items on the disc (including commentaries, interviews, trailers, documentaries)...

See: if they really want to, they can do it!

I disagree with you on that point. The Truffault films are French productions and it's likely that mk2 has the European rights for the release, hence they could be willing to add English subtitles to extend their market to neighboring countries.

On the other hand, Editions Montparnasse releases are American productions which are intended for the French market only. They don't have the rights for other countries. They cannot make releases that would eventually compete with a Special Edition released in the U.K.

We are lucky for instance that the French Subtitles are not forced on the original movie -- it's the case for many recent releases in France.

If you're able to read French, there is an interesting interview with Victoria Willis of Editions Montparnasse at dvd-fr.com. Among other topics, she talk about this issue.

...well, I was talking -specifically!- of the mk2 series of twelve(!) Truffaut films, not about French DVDs in general...

...erm... make that two 'neighboring countries' at best: the UK and Eire. Hardly any non-French-speaking Germans, Spaniards, Italians, Dutch-speaking Dutch or Flemish-speaking Belgians will run out to the nearest DVD shop to get these discs. And average Americans, Canadians and, yes!, even the average Canadien http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/wink.gif will not be able to play these discs, since they are PAL- and Region 2-encoded...

Still, I originally entered my post just to point out that it is indeed possible to have English subs on the totality of a French DVD.

Normally, when I order French DVDs of non-French movies, I make sure that they are provided with subtitles in several languages - that way I can be sure that the subs are optional, not 'forced' (which usually is the case when a non-French-language movie has French subs only - e.g. the Russian/French/Italian/Czech "The Barber of Siberia" - this epic three-hour bore features about 50% Russian and 50% American English dialog, with French subtitles throughout)...
