Expecting the usual 'VAT-free' drivel in my mailbox from the usually overpriced DVD Plus I was quite surprised to see decent prices at their site. The E-mail is listed below:

**** DVD's at COST price ! - Introducing the e-tip ****

Over the last few weeks you are probably aware that at DVDplus - http://www.dvdplus.co.uk - we've been preparing a new initiative which will
shake up the world of DVD and internet retailing and be of great benefit to
you, our customers. Well, today I can reveal our exciting new initiative!
First of all thanks to all of you for being patient. We hope you’ll now
realise why we’ve been so secretive. Please read on!

Our new initiative is called the e-tip (tm).

So, what's this e-tip all about ?
Well, we’re fed up being tarred with the same brush as other retailers who
basically haven’t got their act together. You know what I mean. You've just
spent your hard earned cash by buying something on the web - it never
arrives, or arrives weeks late, and when you try to enquire or complain,
it's like trying to get through a brick wall - no one wants to know !

We’re also annoyed that the media seem to think that all retailers, be it
High Street, Internet or Petrol Forecourt are exploiting their customers,
making stacks of margin out of you all when it’s just not true!

Well, we’ve decided it’s time to act!
Let's be honest, DVDplus will remain successful if we satisfy our customers.
By that, we mean offering fantastic prices, the widest choice and the best
possible customer care. We try our damndest to get the product to you as
quickly as possible, keep you up to date with new titles and industry
developments and to answer your queries as a priority and to the best of our
abilities. Well, from the mountains of customer emails we get, it appears
that we do a pretty good job, but that can't be said for all retailers -
internet and high st - and it's those providing a poor service that we wish
to distance ourselves from, so that's why we're introducing the e-tip.

So what is an e-tip?
An e-tip is all about placing a value on the service we provide to you.

>From now on, all our DVD's will be listed at COST (yes, the price we buy
them in at) plus postage and packing also at COST, and any profit we make
depends on whether you leave us a tip – or not. And that’s entirely up to
you. What’s the catch? There isn’t one. For the first time in retailing
history we’re giving you the power to decide how much to pay. We believe we
offer the best service in the business, so our customers will be happy to
buy DVDs at cost, and leave an e-tip in appreciation of that service.

Here’s how it works. Once you've selected your DVD or DVD's at COST price
and placed them in your basket, the system will automatically work out the
Postage & Packing also at COST price (yes, P&P is really at cost - we don't
add anything like other retailers do to boost profits). You will then see
on-screen a number of boxes inviting you to leave us an e-tip in
appreciation of the service that we are offering you. It is completely
voluntary - if you don't think we're doing the best job in the business then
don't leave us an e-tip - we are prepared to live or die by the e-tip. AND
the important thing to note here is that the default is ZERO - if you don't
award us an e-tip, the system will not charge you anything other than the
cost of the DVD's and the P&P. Also, please note that the e-tip that you
leave will be calculated on the cost of the DVD, not the cost of the P&P.

The system will then calculate the total price. At this stage, you still
have the option to remove a DVD or change the value of the e-tip that you
may want to give us. Once you hit the "buy" button it will take you through
to the normal credit card payment page - and that's it !

We hope you view this new initiative as a positive step. Any comments you
have will be gratefully received - if you'd like to comment please send an
email to mailto:[email protected]

So, to find out how good we are on prices and service go visit our website - http://www.dvdplus.co.uk - and see what goodies we have in store for you!

The new e-tip initiative is now LIVE !

Best Regards,

Bryan Welsh

I’ve seen the ads up for this in all the DVD mags, looks like they mean business. It’s really throwing down the gauntlet to all the other vendors, B&M and on-line - a pretty ballsy thing to do, almost something you’d expect from the US but never in a million years from the UK. Definitely bears watching.

their so called 'cost prices' are
£14.71 for £19.99 titles and
£11.77 for £15.99 titles with 90p p@p these prices are laughable with DVDSTREET and the 10% link you can get £19.99 titles for £14.39 with no p&p charges.PLAY are £14.99 for £19.99 titles and £11.99 for £15.99 titles again no p&p and i'm sure there are more places cheaper.avoid

Waste of time. Their prices are not that low and by the time you've added VAT and shipping, you hardly save anything. And then youll probably feel guilty if you don't leave an e-tip in an effort to actually get it cheaper than elsewhere
