Region Code Enhancing

I know RCE is being implemented by the MPAA. I was wondering if RCE is going to be used for TV programs as well, not just films. I live in the US, but buy a lot of PAL DVD's (I currently use a Sampo multi-region DVD player that is 10 years old and want to purchase a new one). What I purchase are mainly British TV shows that are not available here. I guess I'm wondering if I buy a newer multi-region DVD player if DVD's from the UK (PAL) will work - or if RCE is being implemented in the UK too effecting their TV shows (I'm not really too concerned about films, since I don't buy too many movies). Thanks!

Re: Region Code Enhancing

I've only seen RCE on American discs here and there. My old DVD player played them fine. My newer BD player can't unless I change the region code manually.

Re: Region Code Enhancing

Here are two detailed webpages about how Region Code Enhancement works, and what kinds of multi-region DVD playing methods can handle it. They aren't recent (they're from when RCE was new, 2000/2001) but are very informative if you haven't already read them.

This (a comment written in Jan 2007) states the only example I've found of any use of RCE outside of Region 1; my searches didn't turn up any newer instances of it:

"Q: Does the UK version of Casino Royale have Region Code Enhancement or is RCE still a Region 1 only perversion?
A: Back when RCE came out, a small batch of Region 3 MGM titles were RCE but this quickly got pulled and replaced with standard R3 versions. Except for that, RCE has only 'ever' been used on Region 1 DVDs."
