GOOD "over the top" asian action/horror/sci fi recommendations?

Hey Everyone,

I've been into foreign films for a few years now and am currently on an "Over the top" theme looking for some recommendations.

I've noticed a lot of these popping up in US stores recently, getting mixed reviews online (good ones from people who 'get' the crazyness, poor ones from those who don't like the low-budget style). I don't mind the low-budget films, but I just want something entertaining! These films usually go for $14.99 - 24.99 and often times thats more than the cost of a US big-budget release.

The Zombie Hunter Rika and Undead Swim Team Attack (something along those lines) got me thinking about it.

A few that I already own are: Battle Royale (1/2), Fudoh, Ichi the killer, Gozu, Meatball Machine, Stacy, Onechanbara, Riki Oh, Suicide Club, Tokyo Gore Police, Machinegirl. I'm mostly interested in the outrageous/extreme types right now - stuff like Stacy, Machinegirl and Meatball machine. Any recommendations for GOOD titles like these (preferably with a US release)?

ew, ew ...me ...me!!! I totally dig over the top Japanese stuff ...

Killer Pussy (aka Sexual Parasite)!!!! Immediate buy/Netflix queue ..released by Discotek.

Since you like the Meatball sort of stuff don't forget its origins, Tetsuo: The Iron Man and its OOP follow up. Anything by Tsukamoto is messed up and OOT (never mind frenetic) to different degrees.

Along the yakuza lines (though not quite as cartoonish as Miike's stuff) check out some of Katsuhito Ishii's works ...Party 7 and Sharkskin Man and Peachhip Girl. Maybe even Kitamura's Versus would work for you.

I haven't seen a ton of films along the lines of Meatball Machine, TGP and Machine Girl because really I only liked the first from that list ...but keep an eye out of upcoming releases from the crews behind these films. Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl and Robogeisha are on the way ....

edit .... oh yeah, and Samurai Princess which is written by the same guy responsible for TGP.

Sars Wars (Thailand - 2004), while it does have a bunch of comedy, might still interest you. Here's the trailer:

I expect it is far too refined when compared to most of the other films mentioned in this thread, but Save the Green Planet (South Korea - 2003) has a lot of fans, myself included.

Thanks everyone - just checked out some trailers and there definitely seem to be some winners in there!

I have Versus, Wild Zero and Sars Wars already (and just saw Sharkskin Man/Peachhip girl in the blockbuster 5-for-$20 pile, so I might go grab that while it's there).

Thanks everyone! Any other recommendations are greatly appreciated!

SPIDERONE: Here are a few that are actually good movies as well (besides Battle Royale as someone already mentioned):

Visitor Q, I have nothing against the movies that were mentioned above. I love Machinegirl. I own Versus and I don't even like it that much. All I meant was crazy-ass movies that are actually good movies and not total B-movies as well, besides just being entertaining. It's just nice for a change to see crazy-ass violent flicks that actually have a good story/acting/etc as well...

I recommend THE STORY OF RICKY OH as well. Not a good movie, but a so-bad-it's entertaining type film.

Yeah, I deleted that lead in Toddly (and I appreciate the fact that it appears you did as well ). I originally misconstrued your post. But I also fully agree why you stated it - after the fact.

Most of those films in this thread have very little merit as "complete" films, but each ..to some anyway, have other very redeeming qualities for various reasons, never mind the fact that most are ridiculously entertaining (as you put).

Three more that will probably fit the bill:

SUKEBAN BOY

CRUEL RESTAURANT
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nATM3ZKHZgU

GROTESQUE
http://www.nipponcinema.com/trailers/grotesque_trailer/

I never have any desire to keep virtually any of these Japanese oddities (especially the now famously banned-in-Britain GROTEQUE, which goes out of it's way to make you sick, at least in the first half), and invariably sell them off. The novelty wears off very quickly, and then the next thing comes along to try and top it, inevitably with yet another hardcore porn receptacle getting her "mainstream" break. But they all have their moments, which may be why I imported so many of them over the years, i suppose, but the interest has been waning for a while now . . .

I love Survive Style 5 myself, though it may be too normal for you. It, along with Battle Royale, are my favorite Japanese flicks of the decade.

The first 10 minutes of Dead or Alive are fantastic as well.
