Problem with VLC 0.9.x and Later Releases

I have been using VLC as a multi-region media player for my laptop for many years now. In the past year, beginning with its 0.9.2 and subsequent releases (which appear to have gone through some major code rewrites) this player has stopped working reliably for me -- it would often render corrupted or pixelated video images. I am wondering if the new releases require certain configuration settings to run properly. FWIW my laptop is a Dell 9300 (which has a NVIDIA GEForce GO 6800 Video Adapter) running Win-XP SP3.

Also, are there other multi-region player alternatives to VLC?

AnyDVD should solve your problem: it is a resident program that removes the region, so you will be able to play the DVDs in whatever software players you may have.
The problem is it's not free. I'd say it's worth it though.
