But the Momitsu has HMDI or Component options, so that wouldnt be a problem.

The Momitsu BDP-899 has both. The Momitsu BDP-799 has only HDMI, for $110 less.

Upconverting is only possible with HDMI as far as I know. I didn't know there were BD players without component connections.

The Macrovision copy protection flag on most DVDs prevents them from being upconverted over component. Some players can be hacked to remove this restriction though, although not the Momitsus.

I believe Oppo released an upconverting DVD player without component connections.

Re: Region-Free BD Player: Momitsu BDP-899?

My CMMBX130 showed up last week and I set it up this morning with great success. Region codes work flawlessly. Will have to compare it to my Sony workhorse but as of now I'm planning on using it for all of my DVD viewing and non region-free BDs.

Not bad for $99.

Quick update - I just flashed the CMMBX130 with the latest Momitsu BDP-899 firmware.

I now have a $100 BDP-899.

Nice - can you still use the Curtis remote? Also, where you not able to use the Curtis codes? Worked just fine for me. Just curious why you would use the Momitsu firmware when it worked fine with the Curtis.

Many have claimed the 899 firmware offers better upconverting quality.

bugula -- do you find this to be true? What other advantages have you seen over the default Curtis firmware?

It was also reported here that DTS Master bit-streaming gets enabled with the Momitsu FW.

Am I missing something? The Curtis firmware has bitstreaming for DTS-MA as well. It upconverts rather well, much more than my very old Phillips. I'm just curious as to what the benefits are about using the Momitsu firmware rather than the Curtis.

I've read that as well but can't confirm. I flashed the Momitsu FW as soon as I set the unit up.

Well, if you manage to get a region-free BDP for $100, you'd even get it cheaper than getting two Lite-On BD-ROMs for $120 (when they ship free) and set them for different regions in your home HTPC. Yes, it's not cheaper than three such players (to count for regions A,B and C), but I thought it's worth pointing out the above fact.

Finally on the Momitsu website

And it really looks as if this truly doesn't have the Component Video outputs, only RCA and HMDI.

Just picked up a CMMBX130 from eBay, going to flash it as soon as it comes in.

The Momitsu firmware is more recent and I could see that FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, one of those "problem" Blu Rays, worked under the Momitsu firmware but did not under the latest CM. AVCHD discs also only work under the Momitsu firmware (or at least the ones that I burn did not work under the Curtis firmware).

It is true that the CM remote does not function after flashing and you will need a Momitsu remote or a universal remote running its codes -- with ONE exception: the standby/power-off button only works properly with the Curtis command. So if you're running a Logitech Harmony you will want to use the Momitsu codes and then program it to use the CM standby off command for powering on and off. Otherwise it hangs on the "Goodbye" front panel display when turning it off and doesn't actually go into standby. Don't know why that happens, but it does.

Has anyone gotten BD Live to work after flashing?

Re: Region-Free BD Player: Momitsu BDP-899?

I received my CMMBX130 in the mail today and have really been enjoying the new format (it's my first Blu-Ray player).

I'm all set to flash over to the Momitsu firmware, but I'm wondering what remote options I'll have at that point. I've read that the Curtis Mathes remote does not work with the Momitsu firmware. Is there a way I can order a Momitsu remote, or does anyone have a good recommendation for a universal remote? Preferably something that can still replicate all the functions on a Blu-Ray remote.

Also, has anyone tried flashing back to the CM firmware after using the Momitsu firmware? Not planning on doing so, but I also want to know what my options are just in case.

Momitsu firmware requires a Momitsu remote.

Others have mentioned that the Logitech Harmony remotes use the Momitsu codes. Of course one of those might end up costing as much as the Blu-ray player. I think he was asking if there is a way to get a Momitsu remote or a universal remote substitute. I've been wondering the same thing. I got my CMMBX130 today, and I can't use the Momitsu firmware without a replacement for the Curtis Mathes remote.

I would also be curious to know if you can revert back to the Curtis Mathes firmware if necessary.

Thanks. I may go ahead and flash to Momitsu and see if the new features are worth finding a remote substitute (I'm mostly interested in DVD upscaling and maybe AVCHD playback).

Edit: Just a heads up to anyone else who might be reading - I get an error when I try to go from the Momitsu firmware back to Curtis Mathes. I'm going to redownload and reburn the firmware to be sure, but I figured I'd throw that out there.

Edit 2: Phew - it must've just been a bogus burn the first time I tried. I burned both the Momitsu and CM firmwares to CD-Rs with Toast on my Mac. The Momitsu disc worked as expected, but CM's gave an error. I reburned it as a DVD and it worked fine. All burns were verified in Toast, so I'm not sure what went wrong initially.

Re: Region-Free BD Player: Momitsu BDP-899?

My Momitsu BDP-799 arrived yesterday and I tried it out last night. Only $249 for this thing (via hkflix), and the pic quality is excellent. I watched a BBC DVD, upconverted to 1080i, and the picture was light years better than watching the same DVD with my Oppo 981. Blu-ray's looked every bit as good as my Panasonic BD35... maybe even a tiny bit better, actually, unless it was just my excitement over delicious region-free-ness getting the better of me!

westvillage31,

are you only upconverting to 1080i because of your tv because I thought it could upconvert to 1080p?
