Anyone know where I can purchase the uncut version of Malèna?

The Italian film starring Monica Bellucci.

The film was cut by Miramax when released in the US and many markets have that version released instead of the uncut one.

Does anyone know of a website that sells the uncut version of the film with English subtitles on DVD?

Thanks in advance.

I believe that you are a little late Running Man - the disc has been out of print for some time now. Ebay hunting is probably your best option at the moment.

I was actually referring to the Korean disc (I assumed that it was more than obvious that it is the one to have), which has been OOP for quite some time now. From DVDheaven. to HKFLIX, to Xploited, to DVDAsian...the disc has been long gone for months.

$150.00 on Amazon ...

I´m not sure how rare or valuable this title is. Amazon seem to set the price quite high, though.

However, I´d suggest you to Google-search. Perhaps, you get lucky to find an e-tailor in Asia who might have a copy available.

Be cautious with eBay - they could be Bootleg.

The Thai release has a running time of 108 mn in NTSC, equal to the 103 mn of R2 release minus the 4% of PAL speed-up.

I thought Thai censors were pretty strict as far as nudity and certain types of violence went?

They are. I bought "Perfume" from Thailand, every nudity scene was blurred.

Wow. I had no idea it was so valuable.

As soon as it's announced for Blu-ray I'll be sure to sell it.

I thought they used to cut the scenes instead of blurring them.

Aren't Thai DVDs PAL? If they are then the running time should be 103 minutes not 108.

The Korean DVD doesn't seem as valuable as it's up for considering it's NTSC but has the same running time as the Italian DVD which would mean it's a crappy PAL to NTSC conversion.

You know, I'm gonna make a blind buy for the Thai one and report back. If anyone here does have the Thai disc, please comment.

Back in the day, I was shocked that a copy of "The Double Life of Veronique" on VHS tape was listed for about $550 on eBay. Some time later, I was able to find someone on Amazon Marketplace who had it on sale for $30.

It depends on the distributor selling it in Thailand. Mangpong, Catalyst, and Pacific Marketing are either NTSC or PAL. EVS Limited is PAL only despite what the artwork states.

Ex. My copies of Casino Royale 2006 and Forgetting Sarah Marshall are NTSC 16x9. However, DOA states NTSC Letterbox...its actually PAL fullscreen.

The VideoCDs are PAL format for every release. I've yet to encounter a Thai VCD that is NTSC.

The specs mention: DVD - Zone 3 - NTSC

As far as I'm concerned, Malèna is the definitive Monica Bellucci film.

Re: Anyone know where I can purchase the uncut version of Malèna?

Well, I got the Thai DVD and the packaging on the back of the disc and the specs listed on the websites are inaccurate. The DVD is NTSC but it does not run 1hr 48min. It runs 1hr 43min 18sec to be exact.

This means that like the Korean DVD, it is a bad PAL to NTSC transfer and may very well even be just a straight port of it's transfer.

Other specs are:

Audio:
Thai 5.1, Italian 5.1 and DTS

Subtitles:
Optional Thai and English subs

Extras:
In Studio - A "fly on the wall" behind the scenes look at the recording sessions for the score that runs about 20 minutes or so. No subs in either Thai or English.
Backstage - A 12 minute promotional making of produced by Miramax that is in English.
Trailer - The Miramax US trailer.

Since the Korean DVD is OOP, this is the best option and honestly probably the best even if it weren't for the OOP status of the Korean DVD. Since both are bad PAL to NTSC transfers, the Thai DVD is better suited for English speaking fans since it is cheaper. The Korean DVD had a good amount of extras but none of them had English subs.

I am not sure if the Italian DVD is still around. Does anyone know if it is? If it is I would get that disc and just add the English subs from this on it as the transfer is sure to be a lot better.

By the way, I haven't gone through the movie with this disc yet but from what I quickly scanned I can see no usual Thai censorship at all as described above. However, just to make sure, as soon as I watch it I'll report back.

Um, Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. Virginity would be a setback in her line of work.

Perhaps, you would be so kind to post your comparison over at DVDCOMPARE so they can add this to the comparison database.

Yes, it is. In fact, if you wait a bit, you would be able to get it with a very good price tag (price reduction on the way).

Re: Anyone know where I can purchase the uncut version of Malèna?

Many thanks.

I have already found other titles I was looking for, especially Nanni Moretti's Palombella rossa and Aprile and Rohmer's "autumn" season. My problem is that I also have to factor in shipping. I have found a 7 yo thread where you were discussing this retailer and other alternatives. So you seem aware of what's going on there.
My bottom line is that I might need some suggestions for some titles (possibly "deals", but of higher artistic value than this year's Academy awards, anyway) to add to the order just to make it worth the price paid for shipping.

So far, my finds are:

Visconti's Rocco and his brothers
Mikhalkov's Oci Ciornie
Bellocchio's Gli Occhi la bocca
Nick Ray's 55 Days in Pekin
Olmi/Kiarostami/Loach's Tickets

E 12.99 each.

Well, contrary to the popular belief here, Italian cinema takes the largest share in my library (not French cinema), so perhaps I could suggest a few titles. This being said, a "deal" for me is a great film with a great transfer (not a great price). So, you must clarify whether or not you are open to anything over 15 Euro (and Mastroianni's film you have picked above isn't a great deal).

Let me know and I will suggest a few titles.

Re: Anyone know where I can purchase the uncut version of Malèna?

I also consider a great increase in quality as a deal, if the price differential is just this 2 Euros (or comparable). Yes, in such circumstances I am open to your kind of deals. The best would be to have the most artistically valuable film in the best technical presentation, and hey, the wallet has a word to say too.

I believe at this moment my (in construction) collection mostly reflects the available titles in R1 (although I have a few R2s) so obviously the French cinema is a bit over-represented. Plus it depends where you classify titles like Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West or Marco Ferreri's La grande Bouffe.
