I can (and will. and do so now!) recommend the book -- or any Saramago I have read, for that matter. Very good, kind of Kafkaesque stories -- fundamental questions and tests of human and humanity that involve nameless characters in a relatively timeless and unknown/generally unimportant geographic location.

I'm not sure of too many peoples' reading tastes on this site, but fans of McCarthy's The Road could be into his work.

The DVD Beaver review shows that the R1 does have the 55+Minute "Making-Of" documentary included.
