According to two different sources Pasolini's Salo has been set for a September 22 release in the UK. The previous release of this film in the UK was courtesy of the BFI and I have not seen any news indicating that they will be releasing on BR. But, Tartan own the rights for the rest of the Pasolini's works so if Salo has become their property perhaps there is a chance that the UK distrib could surprise us with another great transfer (The Seventh Seal).

On the same day a 2DVD SE arrives as well.

Let me word this post properly as there seem to be a lot of nervous people as of late elsewhere on this forum:

If you appreciated, not liked, Makavejev's work then I believe that you are mature enough to understand and appreciate what Pasolini did in Salo.

Sorry if I might have missed this somewhere, but can we expect a US release of Salo in BR?

I have not seen any credible info suggesting that such is upcoming.

I don't think it's possible to actually "like" Salo. It's the type of movie you may appreciate artistically, or appreciate as a curiosity, but "like" isn't the sort of word you'd use in connection with it.

Pier Paolo Pasolini’s final and most controversial film has been banned, censored and reviled the world over since its first release in 1975. It did not receive UK certification until late 2000, when it was passed uncut.



The film’s content and imagery is extreme and it retains the power to shock, repel and distress. A brutal allegory based on the novel 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade, the film is a cinematic milestone – culturally significant, politically vital and visually stunning.

damn damn... might have to buy the standard Criterion disc and the BFI bluray - the latter will be region free right?

I would take the BFI BR just because the Coil's work.

All of the extras sound very impressive but I am primarily interested in the presentation. Let's hope that the newly struck transfer lives up to the expectations.

love the cover, it's just as lurid as the initial Criterion laserdisc with the helpless naked victim tied face down, and being whipped.

A Criterion BD of Salò has been all but confirmed, they're just holding off on the official announcement for some reason. Hopefully they do it before the standard-def version comes out -- otherwise you're going to see people buying the DVD and getting justifiably miffed when the BD is announced a month or two down the line. (The same thing happened during the LD-to-DVD transition period.)

My comment remains: I have not seen any official announcement yet :) And all the rumor-talking on the Criterion forum means zero to me if the powers to be don't deliver (a particular Resnais film has been a certainty for years now).

This being said seeing how incredibly strong Tartan's Bergman disc was I have every reason to believe that this BFI release will be top-notch. Especially given the fact that they went straight to the original source for it.

I will be acquiring the BFI disc as I, personally, do not see a reason to hold off, Criterion or not.

That cover is A LOT better than the standard, but Blu-Ray? For Salo???? Pass. I wouldn't want to see all that in high def. Don't think I could take it.
