Apocalypse Code Russian DVD available now (no English subtitles)

Available at http://www.dvdigitall.com/dvd/w15865
Anamorphic. DD 5.1/DTS Russian. No English subtitles.

Anyone know if this movie is getting picked up to be released with English subtitles? It's got Vincent Perez in it. I imagine some USA company would release this film eventually. Here's the trailer for this movie at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-v_6JPwWVI

It looks entertaining in that B-Movie, mid-90s, Michael Bay knock-off way.

I'm in Russia now and just bought and watched the Apocalypse Code DVD.

Although I don't speak Russian, and understand very little Russian, the movie is more or less easy to understand. The main Russian actress is a Russian govt. agent trying to find/prevent bombs from exploding, hidden in major cities. Vincent Perez is a terrorist linked to an arabic terrorist whom are chased throughout the movie by the Russian agent chick. The movie basically is a female Jason Bourne/James Bond movie which has action scenes filmed all over the world (surprisingly for a Russian movie, there is maybe two minutes worth of Moscow footage, while the rest is filmed abroad).
Highly entertaining and extremely slick-made movie. While not the best Russian action movie, I think it's the best "filmed" Russian action movie after Night/Day Watch and Ninth Company.

The movie starts off with a long awesome explosive action scene which is like a combination of the climax in Three Kings and The Kingdom.. It's worth buying the DVD for this scene itself. Other entertaining action scenes include a short but very strategic car chase scene, a skydiving scene, some gunfare, some fist-fighting, and than a pretty good choreographed fight scene between Vincent Perez and the main girl. The whole film is basically filmed beautifully and I hope it makes it out of Russia. I could see this film getting a nice Direct-to-DVD release in the states...

The anamorphic video is excellent and the Russian audio is DD 5.1 and Stereo (no DTS). The audio is very good even with many of the non-Russians getting dubbed into Russian. There are Russian subtitles as not stated on the DVD cover. And the only other extras are trailers for other movies and a music video.

Movie: 7.5
Video: 9
Audio: 8
Extras: 2

Hey Giggles, we are probably going to finally check out Purpurniy Legion tomorrow - original DVDs eh?

I'm surprised with the inflation of DVD prices here. When I last spoke to you, DVDs were around 4 bucks, now they are about 10 dollars. I'm going to pick up Kusturica's Promise Me This, eventhough there are no English subtitles of course. But I would rather see it now unsubtitled, than wait 4-5 years for a supposed English-subtitled DVD.

Do you think Paragraph 78 is entertaining enough without English subtitles? (a lot of good action scenes?). I'm also going to pick up that new Russian kids fairytale cartoon movie, which is supposedly a propaganda pro-Putin film.

Giggles, are there any orignal language movie theaters left in Moscow? We went to 35 MM last night and turned right around when I heard one of the most retarded things ever, even more retarded than Goblin dubbing - original language movies with a "Live Russian Translation"???!!! What the fuck? This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. I would rather see a poor fully dubbed Hollywood movie into Russian than listen to an English movie with some dude doing a live Russian translation merging with the original audio? What is the purpose of this? Is this supposed to be considered some "arty theatrical cool thing?" It's one thing if it's the UN, but this is a movie.

toddly, let me know if you managed to get to Legion and how you found it.
Yeah, the prices rose immensely, I can't understand why - the quality of Russian DVD is the same... Actually I haven't seen paragraph because Russian films annoy me a lot lately - I can't stand them any more But that pro-Putin cartoon propaganda sound interesting, I'll try to check it out.
About original language theaters - I know 'Oktiabr' (on Noviy Arbat street) and 'Kinoteatr pod kupolom' play them in original language. Either with subtitles or you can use headphones like in the plane. 35 MM also shows them in original very often btw.
Yes, Live Russian translation may seem pretty odd Buy actually it's the thing we all here used to. I know it may seem crazy if you encounter it for the first time, but for Russians it's pretty usual thing. Guess it's a like a tradition already - when videos were mostly banned here, films were sold illegaly on VHSs with such a translation made by some unknown translators... They were known by their voices mostly They even make this kind of translation on TV these days.

Giggles,
I went to Purple Legion and was pretty impressed. They have a little bit from everywhere which was nice. If I lived in Moscow I would definitely live in that area. Well actually, this area - Tretiyakovskaya - has always been my favorite part of Moscow even before I was into DVDs. I also liked that Virgin Megastore-type store next to Purple Legion - they also had a few Region 1 DVDs there as well. I only bought Zavet at Purple Legion. There was nothing I wanted to buy from the USA/Asia/France dvds. The store is really not that expensive considering how much it is to buy something from abroad including shipping.

Concerning Russian films, my Russian-father-in-law is saying that Russia is now releasing more USA B-movies in Russia in order to show that Russia makes better movies that America. I believe it, especially when Russian tv plays Tremors 2 on tv two nights in a row...

Yeah, Purple Legion is impressive what regards the choice of DVDs presented from different countries, but the prices... Certainly it may be cheaper for you than ordering to the US from abroad, but just think - for me ordering from amazon or any other foreign website (INCLUDING shipping fees) sometimes is twice cheaper than buying the same DVD in Legion. Just an example - The Sopranos season 6, part 2 cost $66.99 on amazon + about $10 shipping abroad. In Legion it costs about $130-140. The most peculiar is that other seasons cost practically the same! Every new R1 release costs $35-37 in Legion even if it's sold for $10 in the US. This infuriates me.
That other store you talked about (think it was the Soyuz) is a chain of stores, but they mostly sell Russian DVDs. I haven't seen R1s in other Soyuz stores except the one you were in.
Yesterday I told you Russian movies annoy me and you named one of the reasons now - we want to show everyone that our film are better than in any other country. Although we still can't make decent movies. That's the Russian character in everything - to brag we're the best being far behind. This can be seen in everything whether it be economy, human rights or cinema.

Giggles,
Paris has the same type of video store (only a lot better and has everything) on Dante Street and everything cost over 30 Euros which is about the same as Legion. Although this store have a lot of used dvds though for 5 euros.

You are right, I know Purple Legion is still pretty expensive overall, but for Russia, it's a great store. Especially when legitimate Russian DVDs only give the Russian dub option on non-Russian films. Sort of defeats the whole purpose of "DVD", the removal of options and such.

Well as The Exile stated recently, USA is turning into Russia "thinking that they are still the only superpower in the world and making descisions like they are the only one." Whenever I visit Russia, I feel like i'm time-traveling to a future apocolyptic USA. I like Russia a lot more now than in 2000, with it's mixture of new malls, restaurants, technology, and the old but overall not quite working - just like a science-fiction movie. I like how the subway underground passageways with the polatkas (not deep down where the trains run) have those internet machines everywhere, but there are still dying dogs, men without arms, and groups of stinky drunks next to these machines. Like I said, Russia is a perfect example of realistic science-fiction, unlike those unrealistic "clean, flawless, utopian science-fiction films such as "gattaca, equilibrium, star wars, etc.." I would say that "Blade Runner" is more like Moscow than like Japan...

Toddly,
btw Legion also had a small department of used DVDs located at the back of the store, but there are very few DVDs there. Besides people who want to sell them put a price no one would want to pay for them. Why buy used for $20 when you can buy new for $23??? You want to sell fast something used - put a price that will attract people! That's also a Russian nature - let the goods get dusty on the shelf for months, but the seller will never rebate. One day someone will buy it for this price.

Oh, The Exile - it's that Mark Ames' newspaper? I love him. He writes a lot for Russian Esquire and GQ and makes good observations about here. I've been wanting to buy The Exile for a long time, but it's not distributed everywhere so I have to search They have an internet version though. BTW - very nice comparison - sci/fi films and Russia - I never thought of it this way, but there's definately something in it. And I think if you travel about 100 miles from Moscow you'll see a post-apocalyptic environment where people live in shacks, eat what they grow and don't know about TV.
