Rififi - best version ?
Anyne know if there is a superior release than the criterion for A/V?
There's a new R4 which claims to have remastered sound and picture but I havent seen it, and even if it does, r4 releases of films like this are usually r2 ports so it must have been released elsewhere too.
cheers

I know there is an older R4 and a newer R4 (under the directors suite label). dvdbeaver only compares the former. I own the directors suite dvd but haven't had a chance to look at it yet. I'd send you some screencaps, but I don't know how (any resources for this info?).

drpie,
that's the one, the new diresctor's suite version.
as for sharing images, there's a few image upload site like maxuplod and imageshack, but I dont know how userfriendly they are.
or you can just email I guess.
thanks for repling.

Here is a screencap: link
It should match up to the first image at dvdbeaver: link
I used vlc player. The image looks similar to the criterion. However I noticed a lot of combing, but I wasn't sure if this was due to the setting on vlc player - the deinterlace option was turned off. I could play it on my projector later to see if the combing is still evident.

cheers.
what's the runtime? The combing might be the result of an ntac-pal transfer as it is very similar quality to the criterion like you say.
the criterion is around 118 min. if the R4 is proper PAL, it should be 4 min or so less.

Same runtime - looks like an improper conversion. I compared the disc to the MOC onibaba with the same settings on VLC player. No combing on that disc. I'd have to say the combing was pretty severe on the rififi disc. Also yellow subs.

Don't forget, Criterion had problems with their initial run and had to issue a revised/fixed version. There was an exchange program if you had the original disc, they sent you a new one.
