Great, Italian cinema has the largest share in my collection (surely shocked a few people here who might have thought that it is French cinema :). A few quick notes: Avoid the R4 of Mediterraneo, get the Optimum. Night of the Shooting Stars isn't 16/9. The Star Maker has a good transfer, The Stolen Children is slightly above average. Could I suggest also Tornatore's latest. Great, and beautiful, Valeria Golino: http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/sc...e-p-11920.html Speaking of Mrs. Golino you should definitely pick Respiro (the Italian disc has DTS and it English friendly but the r1 is very cheap, don't remember how good the Tartan is). Texas is also nice but the R2-Italian disc isn't English friendly. I believe I recommended Amatemi (Love Me) in another thread already but here's another  I really liked this picture. Very modern, great ambient soundtrack, outstanding Isabella Ferrari. English-friendly. http://www.dvd.it/page/dett/arti/280...A/amatemi.html A mandatory purchase for you should be Valerio Zurlini's double set. No Shame-USA stopped releasing and sooner or later this disc will be OOP. Violent Summer is not to be missed (in fact thematically the film will be in tune with The Second Wife...a young boy falls for a beautiful older woman...). http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_ite...archID=3599336 You probably already have Marco Giordana's La Meglio...The Best of Youth but I am pretty sure you don't have his Cannes follow-up Quando Sei Nato...(excellent picture and a great disc to own, English-friendly): http://www.dvd.it/page/dett/arti/280...sconderti.html Also, Le Bambole...some of the sexiest European actresses of the 60s in some of the, well...you get the picture. I love these gems: http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/le...e-p-11173.html The new restored disc of La Tera Trema from Ripley-Italia is a gem as well. I also see that Optimum have ported Il Caimano for the UK market. I really liked this film for its brash, anti-Berlusconi tongue. Though I am an AC Milan fan (back from the late 70s when they were about even with Inter). http://www.dvd.it/page/dett/arti/615...82_dvd%29.html Artificial Eye's release of Paolo Sorentino's The Family Friend you should also own. I very much enjoyed this film (avoid the Italian disc, not English-friendly). http://www.amazon.co.uk/Family-Frien...9835563&sr=8-1 Ozpetek, the Italian Turk, has his latest out as well: Saturno Contro. Stefano Pasetto's Tartarughe sul dorso with Barbora Babulova is also a film I strongly recommend. I made the mistake to see this on a really fuzzy Russian disc, and o boy, did I hate the transfer. The Italian disc is English-friendly. http://www.dvd.it/page/dett/arti/297...sul_dorso.html Speaking of Babulova and Ozpetek I hope you already own his Cuore Sacro. I believe Optimum also brought this one to the UK. Italian disc is English friendly. http://www.dvd.it/page/dett/arti/266...ore_sacro.html Babulova's Le Spettatrice (can you tell how much I like her) is also a fabulous disc to own. The Italian disc is English-friendly but there is also an Aussie release which is part of their Italian Festival boxset. http://www.dvd.it/page/dett/arti/242...ettatrice.html Not an Italian production but with one of the sexiest Italian stars around Laura Morante, Alain Resnais' latest Private Fears in Public Places was just released with a great transfer in the US (French release is also English-friendly): http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_ite...archID=3821990 Carlo Sigon's La Cura del Gorilla is also a great laugh. I think I had a thread here somewhere (of course English-friendly): http://www.dvd.it/page/dett/arti/494...l_gorilla.html I've also enjoyed a great deal La Visita with Sandra Milo. Top-notch disc indeed: http://www.dvd.it/page/dett/arti/462...la_visita.html Finally L'aria Salata has been a great seller in Italy with very strong reviews from the critics (English-friendly): http://www.internetbookshop.it/dvd/8...IA-SALATA.html I forgot to mention, you should consider this UK disc as well even though it isn't anamorphic: the great Adua e Le Compagne. In my opinion one of the best Italian productions from the 60s (cameo from Marcello). http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adua-e-Compa...9837460&sr=1-2 Quale Amore, I raved so much about it on this forum, is also a mandatory buy. Beautiful and very intelligent rendition on Leo Tolstoy's classic. Italian disc is English-friendly: http://www.dvd.it/page/dett/arti/845...ale_amore.html ...there are more to list but I am too tired to type now....:) Ciao, Pro-B |
Tank you very much for post. Plenty of titles to look for. That should keep me busy for a while.

Hi,
Having used this forum to start my foray into Region 3 film, and for some reason gotten out of the habit of looking for/buying R3 films (don't ask) over the last three years, I was wondering if anyone here could give me some pointers as to what I should get to rekindle the R3 love? It obviously must have been released within the last three years (already have over 80 R3's of the usual suspects on my shelf). Any pointers would be most gratefully received - ta! |
Korea Land! Chickey, you might want to begin a new thread on this ...
But bad news first .. tough market to get popular films as they go OOP very quickly and never return. 3 years is plenty of time for that to happen. So be prepared to spend .. But in the meanwhile, what are the "usuals" that you speak of? Give up a little get that much more in return. |
Usuals, meaning mostly recognisable films like my sassy girl, JSA, ditto, il mare, christmas in august, infernal affairs, sympathy for mr vengeance, my wife is a ganster, attack the gas station, taegukgi, barking dogs never bite, bichunmoo, the classic, memento mori, memories of murder etc. You know, the 'usuals'!
I went through a phase of nothing but R3. So, I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to R3 films to get that I have missed over the last three years. Sorry if I seem to be thread grabbing - let me know and I will start a new one if that is more appropriate. Thanks. |

Amazon has discounted a good number of Artificial Eye releases. I was hoping to pick up Werckmeister Harmonies and Satantango but those will have to wait. |
