Re-cycle - Pang Bros 2-disc CE
Not sure how I feel about this one. A cool concept for a movie...a writer cannot find inspiration for her new book, so she delves into a fantasy world comprised of all her abandoned ideas, and those ideas are pissed at her for leaving them behind. Bring in a "Neverending Story" element where something called The Re-cycle (like The Nothing) comes and erases everything when ideas get pulled for another try. Lots of interesting images in the surreal world, but the story seems a little loosely put together, and ultimately comes off as a heavy-handed anti-abortion message. The Pangs try to add in some of their scary imagery from The Eye, so you kind of have a spooky Labyrinth/Mirrormask-esque hybrid.
The packaging is amazing for a DVD set of this price. It's mammoth in thickness and resembles a book, but when opened, folds out showcasing the two discs and two very nice booklets on the conceptual art for the film. Hidden magnets hold the case shut. The first disc contains the movie and commentary by the Pang Bros and Angelica Lee subtitled in English. The second disc's most attractive feature is a full hour and a half of the movie score (if you happened to like it), but the featurettes, although english subtitled, don't add up to much more than 30 minutes of EPK fluff.
The front of the package says DTS HD, but the audio is not DTS 96/24 as someone here speculated. I'm assuming the HD refers to the video transfer, which is quite good in most spots. The Cantonese DTS 5.1 track is impressive. However, the real downer here is the English subtitle translation on the movie, itself. There are quite a few structural errors, and it detracts from the viewing experience. Surprisingly, the translation is better on the extras, including the commentary. Fortunately, there are many stretches in the film that don't contain dialog.
Overall, I enjoyed this miles more than Abnormal Beauty, but after hearing about the re-shoots on the Pangs' American debut not being done by them, I still fear that they don't have much more to offer.

I received both Re-cycle and Ab-normal Beauty last week but haven't had a chance to watch them yet. Considering how many films I have in my unwatched pile (plus the films I need to watch and review...) I'll probably get to them by 2008.

Did anyone have any audio drop outs with the DTS track?
I thought it sounded excellent, but there would be frequent drop outs that lasted for about one second in length. The DD 5.1 was problem free, but sounded less than spectacular. Other than the audio problem, I really enjoyed the movie.

I was going to buy this DVD based on the cool special effects, but the horror imagery turned me off - it just looks to creepy and scary. It sort of reminded me of a darker and scarier What Dreams May Come from the trailer...

I'd concur with the first part of splattii2's post. I know a friend who picked it up and even though the Pang's have pretty much failed to impress me thus far, I was still somewhat curious. I'll be polite and mearly say I wasn't all that captivated by the film. Frankly, the rumors of it receiving ridiculing laughter by quite a few festival-goer's now make complete sense to me. Still, it's indeed miles better than Abnormal Beauty, which I found utterly tedious.

Nahh.. the only stuffs that comes with it is the 2 booklet showcasing the cinematography of each adventures. As far as toy freebies are concern, there were only two toys that comes with (only if you order from YesAsia)
