Amos Gitai's FREE ZONE is out on DVD

I just got the Russian PAL DVD release of Amos Gitai's FREE ZONE. It's anamorphic and it has English DD 5.1 audio. The quality of both is excellent. The Russian DVD company is called MEGA VIDEO. It's not a bootleg DVD, but I haven't seen it for sale at any Russian DVD online sites.

Released last week in R1 by Seville Pictures. I'm expecting my review copy shortly.
Looks like it's anamorphic, DD5.1, DTS, english/hebrew with english subs.

Excentris, do you know why this went to straight to DVD and not in theaters in USA? It was only released in film festivals if anything.

Thanks for posting the news!

I saw this film recently (not an excellent quality disc, not Russian) being a big fan of Gitai and his early films-It is decent at best! I doubt it Free Zone will have much of a success in the US especially given the current conflict in the middle East and the director's known criticism at Israel's official policy.

That being said, it is indeed a very low-budget production, full of predictable twists, and more than a few fake messages. As usual I was not moved by Natalie Portman.

From the 2005 Cannes line-up this was one of the three films that absolutely failed to impress me, period (the othe two being Lemming and Manderlay).

Ciao,

Free Zone is right up there with being one of the most unwatchable movies that I have ever seen - right alongside Oliver Stone's Alexander, Larry Clark's Ken Park.

Some movies are bad, but can still be watchable with a somewhat decent pace, normal editing and entertainment factor such as Britany Spears' Crossroads or Maria Carey's Glitter, but there are some movies which literally cannot be watched such as Free Zone.

It did have a theatrical release. Albeit a very small, limited one but that's where I saw it. And yeah, not great. Had much higher hopes for it and it just failed to impress.
