I'm interested in picking this up at CDWow for $9.95 per series (2 series). However I'm a little nervous about a blind buy and was wondering if anyone could tell me what they thought of it. I like Michelle Gomez on Green Wing a lot so she's pretty much the reason I'm looking at getting this.

Personally I loved it and my girlfriend at the time watched it just as faithfully. The characters are all really well written. It's a very different comedy to the Green Wing, there's some drama thrown in there every now and again, and the ending of the first series is spectacular, but just as funny in my opinion. If you're buying it just for Michelle Gomezs performance then I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I don't think its for everyone, I'd classify it as dark humor.
I really liked the first 3 eps of the first season, but didn't think the other 3 of that season were as good. I'd still recommend the show though, overall it was entertaining and worth the $10.
I agree with SuicyoDave, if you are buying it for Michelle Gomez, her character was definitely one of the highlights of the series.

Thanks very much. I do love dark humor. Hopefully I'll end up liking it for more than just her but as of now, she's what got me interested in it. I think I'll give it a go. Once again, thanks for the help.

its a short-format comedy drama, was a huge hit here in the UK - just missed the boom in the uptake of DVD players so never really made a splash when it appeared on disc, not enough to make others elsewhere take much notice of it. the show itself might also be returning as a film, the writer / director (annie griffin) behind 'book group' did the film 'festival' which is also out there on R2 UK DVD (won comedy film of the year at that years' british comedy awards). the whole of 'book group' is really about a bunch of characters who all happen to be searching for a way to distract themselves from their own lives, and all this is slowly revealed to one another. its a truly great show, not typical of comedy or of drama. michelle gomez has done some other stuff though... and remember, shes only one of the characters in 'book group'
