Seems as if Sanctuary Visual Entertainment is releasing Dune...on UMD in Europe, according to the Digital Bits.

That's interesting. I hadn't noticed any problems playing PAL discs so maybe I'm already in Film mode. My only problem with the Toshiba 4900 is disc with branching. The R1 Iron Giant and Grave of the Fireflies both make my player stutter. Those are the only two discs out of the over 500 I've played on it that have any problems.

Universal's Dune DVD moving forward...

My sources tell me that the production company that was responsible for the extras on Universal's indefinitely postponed "Dune: Extended Edition", has stated that it has recently finished work on "David Lynch's DUNE (Universal Studios Home Video)".

Not sure if this means Universal are just going to release the 137min cut, with a few extras, or if Lynch has had any involvement. Or maybe the production company got the DVD's title wrong!

More info as I hear it...

Very interesting. I hope it's not a PAL-to-NTSC conversion, though.

anyone know about the language for the extras? Looks like ~$30 shipped from a number of places.

Looks like it will be a PAL-to-NTSC conversion after all. DVD Heaven lists a runtime of 131 minutes, which is 4% faster than the movie's original length of 137 minutes.

I guess the question now is whether they used the muddy UK/Australia transfer or the superior French transfer.

The Korean Ultimate Edition will not feature the extended TV version of Dune. The TV version that many etailers are refering to is in fact the 2000 TV mini series.

Saw a member from another forum post this. It's an e-mail from DVDFROMKOREA. It was sent because DVDASIAN's spec's are not the same as 3 other Korean e-tailers. There seems to be some confusion about the contents;

Thank you for your e-mail.

"Dune : UE" will have theatrical version and TV version(extended version for
TV broadcasting) of this film.

Actually TV Series of "Dune (2000)" has been released in Korea by other
publisher (Sony Pictures) in last June, so it is impossible for Spectrum DVD
to add this TV series(2000) on this UE ."

funny I don't trust the link:

http://homevideo.universalstudios.co...?childId=34773

it's a two disc set, right well? I would assume that it would denote Disc 2, Disc 1 is mentioned twice. Anamorphic for the extended cut, I'll believe it when I see it - cause wouldn't Universal denote the extended cut as the TV cut - or has Lynch actually relented and made a longer version (I highly doubt it). Sorry I'm being very cynical over this, but... ??

also it's José Ferrer, not Jos' Ferrer, jeesh didn't someone proof read this?

You and me both, i'm sure that release date will drift further into 2006 once we get past the turn of the new year.

oh and on a side note - I just received the Korean edition and giving a few key scenes a spin - I thought the DTS sound reproduction of the 6-channel (1984) soundmix is pretty amazing.

okay the extended cut is obviousily the TV version - it's full frame, not 2.35. It's also spread to two discs - go figure? I don't why.

as for the theatrical version the image is pretty good, however not as perfect as the screen shots for the French edition - the first shot of the spaceship as it descends onto Kaitain flickers to a green (washouts?) on parts of the background. I would assume that flaw is not on the French edition - I have to admit I haven't watched the whole movie the whole way through - (currently in a month long Horror film marathon) - so... November is the earliest I will have the time to dive into this (sorry). I wish I could be more specific and detailed.

Thanks for the heads up Giles, sounds like I'll be skipping the Korean release.

Also...

The US release is going to be one of Universal's FAMOUS double-sided releases, a DVD18. I'm looking forward to the DVD player incompatibilities already

I forgot, is the French release 2 discs? TV version is 4x3?

Yes, TV Version is 4:3

The French set is 3 discs (Separate disc for supplements, with the 'Theatrical' and 'Extended TV' version on separate discs)

The flickering in that shot is an artifact of the optical compositing for the special effects. It's always flickered like that.

I also received the Korean disc today. Will try to give it a look later this week.

I took a look at the Korean disc this weekend. It's Region 0 NTSC, and is derived from the French transfer. The PAL to NTSC conversion has some downsides, such as line shimmer in fine details and quite a lot of image judder during horizontal pans. The shot where Baron Harkonnen's face is first revealed happens in a left-to-right pan from his doctor to the Baron, and it judders like crazy. There is an obvious drop in resolution from the original PAL, but the Korean disc also looks a little filtered and soft in comparison.

All that said, it's better than the UK disc, and certainly better than the non-anamorphic R1. Being Region 0 NTSC, it will play in any American DVD player.

Ian Jane's official DVDTalk review mentions edge enhancement and print damage. I didn't see either, but I didn't watch the movie all the way through. The e.e. could be caused by something in his own system.

The French disc is still the best available edition.
