Well, I for one would be interested in this, if it's not too much trouble...

Thanks for the screen grabs... I've been poking through your "Collectors of Dune" site. Good stuff and great pictures!

(Your "Other Books" section seems to be missing the out-of-print Cliffs Notes for Dune, though. )

Thank you for your information. Looks like I'll be buying the French UE for the picture and sound and the British R2 for the extras.

The difference in those screen caps is not subtle. What the hell happened in Australia?

Thanks for this, very helpful. Would you say that the French version presents a sharper image? It's difficult to tell since they're resized - they look similar except for the obvious brightness and saturation. And the cropping. If I can compensate for some of this in software then I might consider saving myself the trouble and expense of importing for now (being in Aus).

Thanks again,

İhris

That's what I'd suggest until the R1 DVD ever gets released.

I've not checked, but I suspect they are using the same transfer as the UK release (the chapter stops are very similar, and they have the UK's extras). The French remastering may have pushed the image alot brighter than Lynch intended, he apparently liked to get the scene very dark, and Dino always wanted more light. We'll have to hope that Lynch one day oversees a remastering of Dune.

Yes, the French DVD looks crisper. Later today/tomorrow I'll add a link to the comparision page to download a .zip of a lossless .png of the Emperor/Rev.Mother pics (full size, uncropped etc) so you can compare youself.
The Australian release is cropped on the left/right sides, so the French DVD at least wins on quanity of image! 8o)

I received my Australian disc last night. A note of warning to those who are interested in the LE tin: The DTS audio in the tin edition has not been corrected. The dialogue all comes from the right speaker on the DTS track. The DD track is fine.

I haven't had a chance to watch on my big screen yet, but on my little LCD monitor the Aussie disc looks exactly like the UK version. The (DD) audio also suffers badly from PAL speedup just like the UK disc. It appears that except for the menus and the DTS track to be a direct port.

Still waiting for the French disc.

Even though the site is in French, the layout of Amazon.fr is the same as Amazon.com so it's not very hard to figure out how what's going on if you've ever used Amazon. Also, your username & password works for all Amazon sites.

I've just checked my Australian DVD (in the LE tin), and the DTS IS correct - the dialogue only comes out of the front speaker on the DTS track. I suspect that you may have not gotten the updated DVD? Here are the datestamps/size of the files in the VIDEO_TS folder:

As promised here is the link to the unaltered screengrabs of the French/Australian DVDs

duneinfo.com/giedi_prime/dvd_compare/OriginalGrabs.zip

Please note, that these grabs are direct from the .vobs, and are not resized to the correct aspect ratio - that job is done by the DVD player.

Enjoy!

Thanks for that Mark. The Oz one is indeed slightly softer.

So I think that makes a total of four sub-par releases for Australia so far... at least they're getting better though. Maybe I'll hold out for the next one

Those with a faulty Disc 1 (Australian) just need to email Force Entertainment and they will send you a replacement. Got mine within 5 days to the UK!

Did you have to mail back the faulty copy? What email address did you write to?

[email protected]

Just tell them that disc 1 of 'Dune' has a faulty DTS track and include your Postal address and somebody will get back to you.

Nice going with the comparisons Mark, can't wait for your R1 SE comparison, when it finally arrives.

Dune: Ultimate Edition (French)

I ordered the Ultimate Edition from Amazon.fr and it took less than a week to arrive. The video quality blows away both the existing R1 and the UK Special edition versions. Simply gorgeous to watch. The English DTS track has a bit more clarity to it compared to the R1's Dolby Digital audio. It was just easier to make out bits of dialog and background effects.

I haven't watched the 4:3 TV edit yet, but I doubt it's had any work or remastering done.

So this was definitely worth the money (for me at least).

I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago but I partnered it with The 2 disc SE of the Last Emperor which had a delay of 8-9 days. Hopefully, mine will ship this week some time. The anticipation is killing me, just not enough to double my shipping fees though.
