I am desperate to get some answers about the Ally McBeal dvds. I won't bother posting the questions unless someone who already owns the dvds (or has reviewed them) posts here and lets me know that they'd be willing to help answer some questions.

This is one of my all-time favorite shows and I really want to get it, but since it's only available outside the US, I'd really like to know what I'm getting and what's best before I go out and spend the money on the box sets. There is a lot of contradictory info out there and I'm hoping someone who owns the dvds already, would best be able to help me get the right answers.

I bought all 5 seasons in new packaging with all seasons coming in one box each from the UK. DVD reviewers told me these were the best sets available, but the one big advantage to the Japanese set is that it has the episode of The Practice which is Part 2 of an Ally McBeal episode in the 1st season.

I wonder where in the world I might be able to get a VCD of that episode.

Those Japanese sets were SO expensive too. 3 times as much as the UK boxsets. I paid about $130 for all 5 seasons.

Why did you just buy season 5? Are you gonna get the other seasons? I can't wait to get mine.

I still don't understand AT ALL why musical rights are an issue here, in the US, but not elsewhere. Why is that, do you know?

Where's a good place to buy the Japanese sets? Are they NTSC? What region? I'd definitely like to get a set that comes with The Practice episode if possible.

What episodes from season 1 is the one from 'The Practice'?

I'm thinking of buying the 5 season collection from a UK store for a friend, but was wondering whether these episodes have the music that originally aired. I understand that the music royalties is the reason there aren't complete seasons of Ally available in the US. Could you confirm? Or did you buy individual seasons? If so...was the original music in them also?

I can't answer your question Nightflyer. I can say that I had the UK set, very inexpensive, and sold them. I pieced together a complete set from the Hong Kong and Korean releases for about half the price of the Japanese release. PAL speedup doesn't usually bother me but it was very noticable in the music on the PAL set.

I only bought Season 4 in UK bc of Robert Downey Jr, and it has the original music.
This year Ally started to being released in my country (and region) as well.
I think those editions also have the original music.
