help with ordering dvds from Denmark

I recently placed an order at www.laserdisken.com for The Kingdom parts 1 and 2 and I received an email response from Niels Ole Pedersen at the site offering to help me order anything else I might like from the site. He gave me a list of all available Danish-language movies with optional English subtitles, so I thought I would post it here in case anyone is interested in any of them (see next post).

Everything on Laserdisken.com is written in the Danish language, so you
probably don't understand a whole lot. If you have any special requests,
please feel free to contact me.

You put DVDs in your basket by clicking on the blue basket symbol. Your
basket is placed on the left side of your screen ("Kurven").

You go to checkout by clicking on the blue "Til kassen" link:

At Trin 2 you confirm your address. Click on "Næste trin".

At Trin 3 you choose "Betalingskort" to pay by creditcard. Click on
"Næste trin".

At Trin 4 you confirm your order by clicking on "Næste trin" and you'll
be forwarded to a secure site to key in your cc info.

At Trin 5 you key in your cc info. "Kontrolcifre" is a 3-digit security
code used in Denmark and some other countries. If your credit card does
not have a security code you leave this field blank. Click on "Betal
..." to finalize the order/payment.

In case you missed them:

Dogville (2-disc):

<http://www.dvd-film.dk/html/visvare.dna?vare=10637244312750031>

Breaking the Waves (2-disc):

<http://www.dvd-film.dk/html/visvare.dna?vare=1068121647188936>

I have a list of all available Danish-language movies with optional
English subtitles. Let me know if you're interested.

Best wishes

Whoever the person is at Laserdisken that sent this list to you is a bit off with the info. I am not Danish but have fairly good knowledge of Scandinavian releases...and Festen DOES not offer English subs....even the re-release. Same with Mifunes sidste sang....though I really wanted to see it

I think the list is correct. The list isnt about nordic releases, but all known releases of danish films.

Festen is availible as a british DVD with english subtitles (the list indicates region - not that it is nordic releases). Mifune is a region 1 release with english subtitles.

I'm not sure I understand.....there is an R1 release of Mifune. Is there something wrong with that release that you won't see that one?

I thought that this film was long OOP as DVDplanet and DVDempire did not have it for a long time and I gave up on it (however it seems like it is back in stock with DVDEMPIRE). As a matter of fact I think that Mifune has been discontinued officially similar to The School of Flesh which I did anage to get last year.

With this said The Sea, another Scandinavian production was also silently discontinued this past February...so very soon there will be no-R1 release. From the director of 101 Reykjavik-Baltasar Kormakur.

ahh, i see. i was not aware that it had gone out of print as i have had my copy for several years. it's still in stock at several retailers, so hopefully you can get a copy easily. you're right, it's in stock at dvdempire, and also amazon. I doubt this will be going for high prices anytime soon on the secondary markets, so that is always an option as well.

I do not agree!! NORDKRAFT alone is a package that easily should be priced around 30-35$. That is what you pay anyway (around 35-36$)...the price of a double criterion plus shipping. In my opinoin the Danish 3DVD set is way, way better than many of the Criterion's produced in the US...both in terms of extras (you even get a 20-something CD soundtrack) and presentation.

Until pro-b and some of the others who actually know what they are talking about chime in, let's see how well I've been paying attention in class:

You're already biting on Adam's Aebler and Nordkraft, so some others might include......Kongekabale, Young Andersen, Arven, Reconstruction, Brodre, In China They Eat Dogs, Old Men in New Cars. I too am considering an order from Denmark so that is why I've been following things a little more closely than usual. Right now I'm leaning "Adam's Aebler", "Nordkraft", "Kongekabale", and because the aforementioned 3 titles leave me just short of the free shipping limit (I'm assuming free shipping is calculated after taking out VAT, so those 3 leave me just shy of 500DKK), I'll go for "Young Andersen" too. The others mentioned are already available on R1 DVD (search "Brothers" for "Brodre") so I'm less inclined to go for those right now (I do already have "In China They Eat Dogs" and am waiting on the DDD sale to pick up the others). Just double-check that all those I've mentioned actually have English subs on the Danish DVD.

Now just wait for one of the experts to check my homework (and I'm sure offer additional selections).

I really enjoyed Ondskan is not danish but the danish dvd does have english subs. I also enjoyed INKASSO, Den Gode Stromer, Bagland, Open Hearts was very good as well. Also I believe that the Arven dvd that axelmusik has does not contain english subs. can anyone confirm?

Also, Can anyone say for sure if the free shipping is before or after the VAT is removed? as this could make a significant change.

I'll heartily second BuddhaWake's recommendation of the Swedish film Ondskan aka Evil. I just watched it a couple of weeks back and while the story is generally familiar, this one was executed very, very well and I really enjoyed it - highly recommended. It is also available on DVD via UK R2 and HK R3 (can't tell you which version is best).

Another recommendation might be Uno from Norway. I haven't watched it yet but it was just released on R1 DVD.

Yeah, agreed, is nothing you've never seen before but it was executed well. and those kids very purely evil bastards.

I think that the guys (Flixtime and BuddhaWake) have already pointed out some of the more recent worthy of seeing films. So, with this said I have very little to add up...

Of course, if you would like to stay on track with the best Danish films (according to the Danes) as of right now your obvious choice should be Adam's Aebler as the film is the official Danish entry for the Oscars!!
My favorite last year was the Cannes winner Reconstruction. I also have a taste for slow oddball flms such as The Bouncer (Manden Bag Doren). I would certainly recommend, as mentioned already, Open Hearts IMO one of the best Danish films from the last 10 years.

With this said I think that none of the suggestions we've made might work for you as it seems like you would be more interested in an action-oriented feature (keep in mind that the Pusher-trilogy will be released in the UK as a boxset soon...the Danish Pusher-2 does not offer English subs).

So, give NORDKRAFT a try, not an action film per se but very dark and gritty. However if willing to explore further...let us know...I will have some very specific suggestions for you.

To answer the question about the free shipping....as long as your total is 500DK before the VAT you are safe!! Indeed a very good deal from a top vendor!!

Ciao,
Pro-B

Just wanted to let you know that I have not forgotten your request but we never got a copy at the review panel of the R1 version. Looks like they did not bother sending Geoff a screener. I was ready to write a review for you though....

Ciao,

Appreciate the update. I figured it was something like that. No big deal really as I'd planned on buying it blind anyway. If the generally positive reviews out there are indeed accurate, then it's unfortunate that the DVD release flew in so under the radar thereby denying the film a larger audience.

Anyway, I'm still kicking about the final details of my order......anyone seen the film Dear Wendy? The DVD is listed on Danish sites (the film is English language, I think the DVDBeaver review has a typo as it mentions Danish not English language - laserdisken seems to indicate English language on the disc). I've enjoyed Jamie Bell's work in both "Billy Elliot" and "Undertow"; he's the lead in "Dear Wendy". Maybe this question would be more appropriate in the "Manderlay" thread, oh well.

Ok...other serious Danish films, I went through my collection this morning and Dag Och Natt (2DVD) is a good choice, En kærlighedshistorie a.k.a Kira's Story is good, Hawaii Oslo...is very good and think right up your alley...some fresh action, The Finnish film PAHA MAA is superb (look the thread around here), and once again see Manden Bag Doren (I really love this film)...and as I mentioned above you must own Open Hearts

Hope the film too is at least on par with what I've read about it.

Usually being a bit under the weather is a good thing for a cinephile - nothing to do but stay in bed and watch movies all day & night, unfortunately it sounds like you are more than a few notches below "under the weather"....get well soon amigo.

And if it makes you feel any better - misery loves company and all - I'm a bit sick too....but it's a different kind of sick as I'm just 24 hours removed from hearing the news that my beloved Red Sox decided to go brain dead thereby destroying any hopes I have for the next few baseball seasons. Okay, so this bit of news didn't make you feel any better, but at least I feel a little better venting the frustration.
