Cdjapan.co.jp--is it reputable?

Hi everyone,

I've ordered something for the first time from cdjapan (the Manhunter DTS DVD re-release/price cut--slow shipping only Y500!), but now they want me to fax/post quite extensive credit card verification. This is fine in theory, but still, it seems strange as I have never had to do this before with an online merchant. I don't feel comfortable faxing/posting this info, including my full credit card number (if I did, I'd post it, as international faxes are quite expensive). So I'm wondering if anyone has ever had any problems with them (I assume many people here use them to order stuff from Japan). Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've ordered from from CD Japan before and never had any problems. I've never heard anybody suggest that they are anything other than a legit e-tailer.

The process of requesting some conformation of credit card details - often a faxed copy of a credit card statement showing your name and credit card number - is not unusual. Although the likes of Amazon don't do it, some other e-tailers do. I had to fax such details when I ordered camera gear from one of the better known US camera e-tailers.

Myself I'd fax it rather than posting it. Its almost certainly a whole lot quicker, less likely to be intercepted/lost etc, and I wouldn't have thought that it would be all that much more expensive. ymmv of course.

So...my credit card number, a copy of a statement, with account numbers and addresses, a copy of my driving licence.....that's enough for IDENTITY THEFT. Come on. I've never heard of such a thing until now. Jesus H Fuck, it was for a goddamned $13 DVD!! Sorry, this isn't directed at you. I've faxed stuff internationally from Kinko's, it cost me $10. $10!! The fucked-up thing is, they've already taken the money from the account. This is fucked if you asked me.

I order from them at least two times a month and have never had any problems. Additionally, I've never been asked to provide them with any of the info you have been asked to submit. I have heard of other overseas "E"-tailers requiring this info on initial purchases but never from CDJapan.

I've been asked to provide similar information before from a non-US e-tailer. What I did was look at their website for contact information to verify the fax number was indeed theirs and not some scam. I also blocked out some of the credit card number. I figure if they get most of it, that should be sufficient enough. Never had a problem.

Some sites are now asking for the 3-digit security code on the back of your card. That way if someone has your credit card number, they can't order anything online without this code.

Well, I've emailed them and basically said, Homey don't play that. Like I've said, they've already taken the money, so what the bloody hell is the problem? We'll see what happens.

Seems really strange they would already charge your card and ask for your information. Have you confirmed that it was them requesting this information?

CDJapan is certainly reputable. If you dislike their policy, simply take your business elsewhere and point out your reasons. Just remember that with all standard CC transactions, the etailer has to prove it was actually you who placed the order etc., not vice versa. Thus I can understand why they would want to verify the customer's identity, esp. for first-time customers ...

That said, this sort of thing really seems to happen on a per-case basis - I placed orders with cdjapan (and several other places that are known for requesting additional information from customers) and was never asked for any additional info.

Ordered Hero from them couple months back. Other than taking awhile to get to me (I chose EMS or something.. VERY SLOW ! but cheap), everything went smooth and fine. They didn't request anything from me.

Same here, it took about 2.5 weeks for Hero to arrive. OTH, I've used EMS from other dealers in Japan and the items usually arrive in 3 to 5 days.

EMS is the only mailing service I use with CDJapan and I have always gotten my orders in three days.

OK. I've emailed them and said I don't feel comfortable faxing/posting ALL OF MY PERSONAL INFO and they quickly wrote back saying my order is processed. I guess that did it. They were cool about it. I still think faxing all of this info is dangerous. I'd do an international money order, but the extra cost is, what, almost 10 bucks? Well, anyway, case closed.

I've ordered from them numerous times and didn't have to give them all that info. It was either a random thing, or maybe there was some kind of red flag? Anyway, I would feel uncomfortable having to give all that info too, and it's cool that you ultimately didn't have to.

Anyway, cdjapan has always been great for me. I go with the cheaper shipping and get my stuff in a week (as long as everything is in stock)

I've ordered from them several time.
They ask personnal info and credit card fax copy for security issues only once : at your first order and if you're not living in Japan.
Since i feel very uncomfortable sending my personnal credit card info, i pay my first order with money order. Since then, no more checking.
