How bout a whole thread on "Spaced: Definitive Collector's Edition"...
I wanted to see what all the hubub was all about. I read some reviews and got one definitive perspective (thanks Sessa), but wanted some other chatter and DVD speak from "viewers like me".
How is it? as a series...I've heard references to live action "Simpsons", but are the homages/antics at all "Dream On"-ish? What else should I know before I purchase? Thanks in advance... |
Trio is showing it again. - http://www.triotv.com/spaced/
I like it. It's made by a lot of the same folks who made Shaun of The Dead. If you tend to enjoy British Comedies, it shouldn't be a problem to get into it. The jokes tends to come at you fast like in the Family Guy or Simpsons. Official website - http://www.spaced-out.org.uk/ |
I really want to pick this up.
Where is the best/cheapest place for this? |
The best place to pick it up is going to be either amazon.co.uk or www.cd-wow.com.
I held my first "Spaced Party" this last weekend, and it went great. Every single person I've shown this gem to falls in love with it instantly. It's inspiring people to pick up region-free dvd players, for crying out loud. You don't have to be a fan of Brit humor to get it, either. A lot of the referrences are based on US geekdom. I dig this show and The Office, but I've tried other shows like The League of Gentlemen, and I just couldn't get into it. |
i thought this series was all the rage...only 3 comments?

All of my thoughts are in the BritCom thread, which you've already read. Not sure what you want to see here. As far as I can tell, pretty much 100% of the DVD Talkers who've seen it love the show, myself included (as well as 100% of the DVD Talkers' friends). How much more convincing can we do? |
One of my all time favorite TV series. I fell in love with it when I lived in the UK, came back home and bought a region free player just to watch it. I too showed it to all my friends and probably 5 or 6 of them bought region free players just to watch Spaced.
Great show. |
I bought this with the recommendation that if I liked Shaun of the Dead, I'd like Spaced. Why not, I thought, I like British Sci-Fi comedy. I was disappointed at first when I found out it wasn't Sci-Fi, but fell in love with it after the second episode. Great stuff, highly recommended.

This is one of my favorite dvds I own, from the actual program (it's one of the more RE-watchable things ever) to the great extras. As much as I like Shaun of the Dead, I enjoy Spaced a lot more. It's a wonderful collection of an amazing show.

I bought this DVD set a few months ago as a blind buy. The first episode I watched was from the 2nd season because someone had raved about that particular episode to me. I was pretty disappointed, finding it only marginally more inventive than an above-average American sitcom.
However, I went back and decided to start all over again from the very first episode. What can I say? I was completely hooked after that. It's sort of like a slacker version of NED AND STACEY with all the pop-cultural hipness of a Kevin Smith movie -- but way cooler (and funnier). I think the moment I realized that this series was going to be something special was in the 1st episode when the two leads (Tim and Daisy) opened a closet door and these two creepy looking girls were inside ("It took forever...and ever...and ever"). I'm probably in the minority, but I thought the first season was better than the second. It seemed a bit more character-oriented, whereas the 2nd season kinda overdid it with all the movie homages (particularly the somewhat-dated MATRIX episode). Still, there's some terrific stuff in the 2nd season too, so it's hard to quibble with it. Simon Pegg is quite funny and likable as "Tim", although I think Jessica Stevenson is the real heart and soul of the series. Overall, I give this DVD set a very high recommendation, particularly if you're into comicbooks and cult movies or if you're a writer who knows what it's like to have chronic writer's block. And, anyway, you gotta love a show that uses Prefab Sprout on the soundtrack...even if the song is from their worst CD. |

Just in case you are wondering what it looks like. It is $35.95 at CDWOW with free shipping. Excellent series. I would recommend it to everyone. |
I adore this season. I must of watched the Battle Bots episode 15 times by now as it's home to some of my favorite lines.
"There's nothing more devistating than a big chopper." "Shhh...don't cheapen this..." "Dexter and Cromwell...but who did this?" "THEY DID!" (after finding the damaged bot) "oh shiiiiiiiiiiit." "Timmy...fetch me my tools." God I love this show. Easily overtook The Office to be my fav Brit-com. Not to mentions the extra's on the 3 disc collection. The bloopers alone are with the price. |
Spaced is a cracking TV series you can't go wrong with.
Some think Spaced tries to be too clever with all of the references, but I disagree. The references are merely icing on the cake, as the writing of the show stands on its own. Take away the references, and you'd still have a fine show with just a few less giggles of recogition in the references. The writing is superb, and the comedic timing between Jessica and Simon is terrific. Another aspect that makes it so watchable is the superb characterization and development of genuine relationships between the odd characters. The depiction of Brian the neighbor is a great example. Most comedies would make him a caricature of a tortured artist and leave it at that. In Spaced, Brian is a weirdo, but he's also very "real" with hilariously odd behaviors combined with very naturally-human reactions to situations. The only weak character of the group is Twist, imo, mostly because she hasn't been in enough episodes to develop her character. And too bad Bill Bailey's Bilbo isn't a larger part of the show! Bill is brilliant, especially his performance in season 2, episode 2. :) The show also doesn't feel like a sitcom, thanks to the direction of Edgar Wright. There's no canned laughter, thank goodness, and the scenes are shot from one vantage point, rather than the typical multiple views of a sitcom. If anything, it feels more like film than tv. And being a British series, the writers know when to stop, rather than dragging it on and on and on. That being said, though, I'd love to see Tim and Daisy together onscreen again for a third series, or even a special. :) Speaking of specials, the definitive edition includes the "making of" documentary that is interesting and informative. |

They totally could have used another season and I'm sad it (or a special) hasn't happened. However even though it's a totally different world I view Shaun of the Dead as a continuation of the show. Not the shows storylines, but more it's humor which I love. I hope Simon and Edgar make more flicks together, and hopefully incorporate Jess into them as well. |
Much as I love Spaced... why another thread on it?

i recently went region free and want to pick this set up. is cdwow still the chaepest place?
|
It was also nice to read that when Simon & Jess got together for the retrospective documentary on the 3 disc set that they sat down and wrote the first scene for series 3, should it ever happen. My first region-free purpose and the reason for my buying the player. Really funny, very human. I'd also recommend Black Books and Big Train to anyone who enjoyed Spaced.

NOOOOO! Spaced:Collector's Edition OOP???
I've looked everywhere for the Spaced:Complete Series: Definitive Collector's Edition, and its out of stock, and on Xploited Cinema it was removed completly.
Did this go OOP? |
Wow. I'm glad that my girlfriend bought this for me from Amazon.co.uk this past Christmas.
As for you, I hesitate to recommend eBay. I did find one company that has it in stock (allegedly), but I don't know where they ship (link below). Also, diabolikdvd.com has it listed, but not in stock; you could email them and ask if they are getting more, but it does look like it may be OOP. Many sites have removed it or don't have stock. Best of luck. http://www.tsc-dvd.be/dvddetail.php?dvd_detail=VCD0431 |
