Whisper of the Heart (1995) how is the quality? (R2/R3/R?)
Whisper of the Heart (1995) by Yoshifumi Kondo based on a screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki. Does anyone know if the R2 (Japan) and R3 are anamorphic widescreen? How are the quality of the DVDs, are there any other regions available, and which one would be the best one to buy? I really desire to get my hands on this one, but I want a good DVD. Any help would be grateful.

In general the Japanese and RC3 (Hong Kong or Korea) release of Ghibli movies are excellent. AFAIK they all have anamorphic widescreen (WHISPER for sure).
The Japanese versions are often the best but the difference is not very huge. The price of the Japanese DVDs is of course huge.

I have the R2/Japan edition of Whisper of the Heart (my personal favorite of the Ghibli films). The transfer is anamorphic and it looks quite good - certainly an improvement over the LD, which I sold after getting the DVD. No problems with the video, the audio or the subtitles.
Frenzy: You say the price is huge but I think the DVD was about half the price of the LD. If you're penny-conscious, the R3 may be the way to go. I have the R3 editions of Totoro and Pompoko and they're pretty solid.
