Necronomicon 2 disc edition (France)

Has anyone noticed that Seven 7 in France are releasing the H P Lovecraft adaptation Necronomicon next week as a special 2 disc edition.

Is Seven 7 one of those dumb companies that uses forced French subtitles during playback with an English language track?

rand_hobart 02-01-05 11:25 AM

Well I've ordered it and once I recieve it I'll check and post here; unless someone else can already answer this. I've had a couple of other dvds by this company and you could turn off the subtitles from the dvd player remote. ( The French edition of Crying Freeman was one).

I'd say that's a good sign then, thanks.

Boo!

DVDFR have got it wrong in the past. I should know for certain in the next few days.

I can confirm that this does indeed have forced French subs on the English track; c'est la vie. Rather spendid ENGLISH commentary track from Christophe Gans and Brian Yuzna, though. And a second disc of extras I've not had a chance to check out yet.

Well....too bad....

Forced French subs on the English track = NO SALE

Are the French the only country to do this? I haven't heard of any others. It's completely inane... Can someone explain the logic? Are the French just so snooty that they cannot fathom that some French people know English and don't want or need the forced subs? *sigh*

NO...The French are not the only country to do this. And it has nothing to do with the French being snooty or anything of that nature. It has a lot to do with rights, distribution contracts, etc. This issue has been covered many times before...

Voila....

Bizarrely the second disc of extras has the option of French and English subs. The English subs only present when French is being spoken.

They are just "forced", not burned in, right?

If so, most "codefree" players can just ignore that "force" command.

Or am I getting something wrong here?

Thanks,

S

They are forced; NOT burned in. I don't know if any players can bypass this. Both of mine seem unable to and they're multi region.

I guess I've just never seen it covered here before. My apologies. I'm relieved that it's not just the French doing it, but it is a very disappointing practice.

I'm opening a new thread to inquire about forced subs on another French release of a US movie. Hopefully the answer is "no."

Thanks, Pro-B. :)
