Umm, yeah. I'm going to have to get this even though it's going to be a triple dip. :)

Looks good, and Price $12.72 US only makes it that much batter :p

dmpre99 01-17-05 09:24 AM

The second disc actually contains the 'Original Long Version' and the 'International Version'.

Lemdog 01-17-05 09:08 PM

Do you hear that .... it's the sound of me spending more money.

Joe Molotov 01-17-05 10:18 PM

Hmm...for a 3-Disc Ultimate Edition, the extras aren't quite as impressive as I would have hoped. It looks like basically the same thing that's on the Universe HK DVD, plus the Miramax cut. If the A/V was good and it had decent subtitles, it'd almost be worth the $12 just to have the nice looking boxse, thought. We need comparisons here.

where is my wallet....

The DVDasian link has screenshots of the menus:
http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/18433.html

From those, it looks like the Miramax, or "International," Cut has only a Cantonese audio track, with optional English subtitles. From the screenshot of the chapters, it looks like it has the CGI'd in English where Chinese characters originally appeared in the film.

28 bucks?? ouch. Is there ever a time when dvdasian is the place to order from? I can't think of (m)any.

Oh - here's a question... are the english subs good on this version? Better than previous versions? That's a question for someone who triple dips.

yesasia says no longer for sale

why can't God of Cookery get a nice set like this?

goosh 01-23-05 03:07 AM

I noticed the koreandvds website shows the area code as Region 3, while the dvdasian site lists it as ALL. Is this a misprint on one or the others website? Or is this just an instance of a Korean DVD being "Region 3" but will play in any region dvd player anyway.

Also, why such a large difference in price between these two sites?

From my expereince dvdasian is always correct on which region it really plays. So if dvd asians says all it would go with that one. also dvdasian is always expensive and i would never buy from there. But then again in this case you have to consider shipping costs from overseas so thats up to you.

royalwithcheese 01-23-05 04:57 PM

is yesasia the only one that's been stopped from selling it, or is miramax able to stop everyone from selling it?

Anyone based in the States, yes.

j_sutton 02-04-05 07:48 PM

A Note - Just received this today, a nice set (especially for $12!). Unfortunately, none of the extras are subtitled in english (I was hoping, but not too confident). The picture quality is nice, along with the sound. The Mirimax cut is only in cantonese (was hoping for english, just for laughs). Also, it is region-free, despite the Region 3 label on the back.

j_sutton 02-05-05 12:33 AM

Update: It appears that the first disc (original HK theatrical) has the same interlacing problems that the original HK Universe disc did (most likely, the same transfer). Also, it has the same bad subtitles. The HK extended version, however, has a nice picture and the newer/better subtitles.

Do you mean the same subtitles that appear on the Miramax R1? Because while newer, those subtitles aren't necessarily better.

j_sutton 02-05-05 12:14 PM

By better, I mean gramatically. I actually prefer the original subtitles, but the Miramax ones are easier for non-fans to understand (ie car repairer is replaced with car mechanic).

And "bald" is no longer spelled "blad". ;)

Jay G. 02-05-05 02:10 PM

"kick-back" however is still spelled "tick-back."

The Miramax subtitles still have grammatical problems where they're directly copied from the Universe ones, such as in the prologue. Where it doesn't copy the Universe subtitles, it copies the dub, which mistranslates some things. For example, in the same "car mechanic" scene, the Miramax subs mistranslate the "seems like the cloud in the sky" line as a literal comment about the weather instead of a metaphor for his team's reputation. And there's deliberate alterations like where Iron Head now says that Sing's lyrics were "too intellectual" instead of just crappy.

And where the subtitles don't copy the Universe subtitles or Miramax dub, they sometimes just outright don't translate lines. For example, in the extended dance sequence, the butcher's thoughts about secretely wanting to be a dancer go untranslated. Later, during Sing's fight with the gang, one gang member's dismissal of a ball to the stomach is supplanted by the subtitles to what a fellow member says a few seconds later when he bends over to hurl.

The only marked improvement is that the Miramax subs translate what the signs say in the film, which is a carryover from the CG manipulation Miramax did in their edit of the film.
