Cheapest player that will play DVD's from England

Hey all,

Ok, I was into this about a year ago, but at the rate at which new players come out, the old players are probably not around.

Ok, simple question. I have a friend from Englad coming over to live in the U.S. Now, needless to say he has a bunch of Region 2 PAL DVD's. Now what is the cheapst DVD player ( for around $50 or cheaper is possible, brand does not matter) that will or can me made (via the remote) to be fully compatible with Region 2, PAL DVDs (also one that properly does the 16:9 conversion correctly)?? I have a friend with an old DAEWOO that did this all and it was only $35, so i know they are cheap.. If anyone knows of any current ones that do this from wither circuit city or radio shack, and can share the brand name, model number, etc of is, that would be SUCH A HELP.....

I thank you in advance....

Thanks,

Matt

www.amazon.co.uk

They (unlike Amazon.com) list which players are multiregion. Just read the comments below or the description.

I'm not sure you'll get anything under US$50. I'd spend a little bit more. Just read the reviews.

Ah, I read your post wrong.

But, why not just get a UK DVD player and a voltage convertor?

I have a Daewoo 9200 that i recently picked up at Target for $49, plays everything great, region hack is 4 buttons via the remote. Seems like a great player so far, except you do have to be very careful with the disc drawer, its very flimsy.

A family member bought one of those. I was just watching a movie on it tonight. Plays great. One thing though, and it might just be with my player.... but if you don't use the progressive scan, you might, like I did, run into a problem with the regaular composite plugs dying on you. Thankfully, the same didn't occur to my other plugs for the progressive scan.

Hey all,

Thanks for the responses so far -- will the Daewoo 9200 mentioned above play PAL DVD's? How about playing 16:9 PAL dvd's correctly?

Thanks again,

Matt

Plays PAL dvds and 16:9 PAL correctly...I'm actually watching the Enemy at the Gates R2 PAL from the UK right now.

To what Bill said a couple posts up, i do have it hooked up via the components. I've had a couple Daewoo dvd players in the past (not as my main player but for region-free), and i haven't had any problems with any of them.

Hello again,

Awesome -- sounds good. However, the model at the Target here is Daweoo DVG9200N. The "N" is added -- is that the same one still?

Here's the ad:

The Cyberhome 300 can be had for about $40. I don't own one, but I do like the compact styling.

Hi--

I also have a DAEWOO, model DVDP4851, which I bought on-line. But I paid just over $100.00 for my player. It's multi-region, with automatic PAL-NTSC conversion, and vice versa, and you *can* change the voltage controls as well. Go to the website: www.dvdoverseas.com

I routinely order discs from the UK and they play just fine on my player.

Note they ALSO sell a wide variety of power converters, multi-system TVs, etc, so your friend may find another solution to his conversion problems.

Another fine player is the Koss KD 365. It can be modded from the remote and goes for $45 @ Sears.

Yep, it looks like the same as the one I bought in Sept. I can't remember whether it was DVD or DVG, but it was a 9200N. (I gave it as a gift so I can't check.)

Memorex MVD2022 on sale at Sears for $34+$10 rebate. There is also a $5 off $25 coupon at the usuall bargain websites. So ~$20 when all said and done.

I just picked this player up yesterday, decent enough. Progressive output, unlocked it, played a PAL disc just fine.

That Phillips player listed above (dvp642, I think) is a great player. Plays everything you'd thing to throw at it. Definately worth it.

Does that unlock it forever or do you have to do it everytime? How exactly does this unlocking thing work? Can other players be "unlocked?"

Yes, it will make the player region free forever. Some players can be unlocked via remote control.

I also suggest the Yamakawa 238 & 288. http://www.yamakawadirect.com/

You might want to find a DVDP from DM Technology from where you reside. DM-611. Our moderator on our forum got one just the other day and he says it's awesome for it's price. NTSC/PAL convergence all works and remote control code freeable.

He got his in the mid $70 but you might be able to find much cheaper pricing at your location.
