i had a friend download the 15 minute blooper reel, deleted scenes and a short "Making of" presentation in rmvb format (playable on real player) ripped directly from the VCD that was handed out for free in theatres across Hong Kong. (a great way to lure in more box office numbers.)
*the following may contain spoilers*
there were some deleted scenes that appears to me as some kind of an alternate/"what if" kind of scenario. in one scene 2 people who died in the film, actually survived the attack. then, it goes on repeating some of the dialogue from the finished product (eg. instead of the landlady punching out the barber, it's the tailor who's punching out the barber).

Hey Wing---are there any good places in the Oakland Chinatown for DVDs. I haven't been there in years. I just remember you have to get off Broadway from 880. I usually go to SF Chinatown but I hate driving there. Thanks in advance.

Just recently converted my dvd player to be region free, and am still a newbie at buying foreign dvd's. So far all my purchases have been online, but would be interested in going to some actual places to browse through what they have to offer.

to answer both...
there aren't many places in oakland for dvds...
they're mainly vcd shops...
of the few places with dvds,
i go to firelink at the corner of 8th and (i think) harrison or maybe franklin
there are some other shops on 11th st...
prices are reasonable for the most part...
escape from hong kong island was $13
not great...
but if one includes the cost of shipping from online shops............
it's just convenient when i just want that one or two dvds...
as to shops in sf...
there are a bunch, but my directions suck for there...
i usually just walk around and see who's willing to deal...
ah...
which leads to another thing...
though less of a hassle to get to,
the shops in oakland are less willing to wheel and deal...
not saying they won't...
it's just much harder...

Thanks, wing, for the response. Looks like I'm going to have to take the extra time to hop on Bart and head into SF if I'm going to really find some good places to shop.
Have to admit tho' that I'm not very good at wheeling and dealing, and usually just pay whatever the going price is for something.

If you park in the underground parking and go up to Grant St. there are at least five different DVD stores if you walk towards Broadway. There are also a couple on Jackson st. It crosses Grant so you can't miss the street. There are at least two good stores on Jackson. One is called Gift and Entertainment on Jackson. You can't miss it; just go up the hill on Jackson and it should be on your right hand side. The store banner looks like a "blue" filmstrip. The oher one; I can't remember the name is on Grant on the right hand side. You can't miss it because they have a bunch of region free players in the window display. There's also another one that doesn't charge tax; this one doesn't have a name on the front at all. It is literary a hole in the wall. Let's just say if your walking on Grant and you pass a Hello Kitty store with diecast cars in the window display; just backtrack and you'll find it. Hope that helps.

In Chinatown in SF I saw the LE for $79 last Saturday. The regular edition was $16 in one store but I think you should be able to find it cheaper in other stores.
About the dvd, the sound and image quality is really good. I watched it in my callibrated plasma and it looked really good.

Anyone know when the Kung Fu Hustle DVD will be released in either region 0 (all) or just an American version? I don't have any money to buy or want to bother buying another DVD player that has region-free capabilities. Anyone know any dates? Thanks.

Hmm, there doesn't seem to be a UPC tag on it. Has anyone figured out how to add it to DVDProfiler without one? It isn't listed in their database, and if I try to add by disc-id that doesn't work either.

DVD-wise, the quality is pretty good - a strong, sharp and vibrant image, with bowl-trembling DTS. Oh, and NO insert
Though, the dvd is absolutely barebones, it's a solid presentation.
Still, the movie could have used a few more fights, and a lot less CG.

I watched it last night and thought it was pretty good. There were a lot of funny scenes and the pic quality looked amazing on my HDTV. Ditto on the DTS track. Too bad it was a barebones edition; but I only watch those only once---so not really a big deal.
