Arahan - R3 KR

Oh, I really liked the movie too - it's a lot of fun. The first 60 minutes is basically the set-up, though entertaining, then the last 50 minutes is just wall to wall action. There's some great martial arts stuff going on in there. And it's shot so well - you always know whats going on. It's not like most American action films where they shoot everything in really close shots and just cut cut cut to give the impression of action, while nothing is really moving. In Arahan you get nice long takes shot just far enough away to able to see the performers do their thing.
BTW, pat -
Could you clear up for me what happens in that scene at the very end - the one that plays over the credits? I had no idea what was going on - maybe it was a Korean thing, I dunno.

slop101, why the hell did you ask me that, now I want to watch the movie again.
Trouble is, it's getting kinda late already and I'm sure it won't make my neighbours like me more.
Okay, probably some spoilers to follow.
So, the ending. If it's really a Korean thing, then it goes over my head as well (I'm not Korean), but it's just an epilogue scene. Sang-Hwan, maybe, wants to see Eui-Jin, so he raids the school. Either that or he wants more aphrodisiacs. I think it's just a silly scene, with no real cultural referencing.
Done.

I just got mine yesterday. Awesome packaging!! It is a great set, now hopefully the movie will be nearly as cool as the set is. Planning on watching it tonight or tomorrow.

It's kinda like Shaolin Soccer, only without the soccer, and not quite as silly. It also has much better production values.
I can see Miramax buying it, shelving it for a few years, releasing it cut by about 30 minutes and then releasing an uncut dvd, only with none of the great bonus materials that are already out there.

Maybe too late, but regarding what slop101 and pat00139 were talking about.
I understood it as the police raiding their unlicensed acupuncture practice. They were preparing aphrodisiacs as bribes or to get the police to forget about it.

Got Arahan a few days ago and it's now probably one of my fav. comedy/martial arts films. There were some scenes that I couldn't stop laughing. Only problem I had with it is that there's a bit too much babble about chi and tao. I started tuning it out cause it was confusing me (especially during the last fight).
This movie also had some pretty good production values. Anyone know what the budget was?
I'm surprised that no American studios have bought up the film yet. I think it would translate pretty well over here.
