Heroic Duo - anamorphic?

Spotted this disc in Chinatown today. Almost bought it but the back of the case just says "Widescreen", and I got burned recently with non-anamorphic versions of The Eye and JSA.

Anyone have it?

I could check for you, but in all honesty - it's not that great a movie and can safely be avoided. Let me know if you want me to check anyway.

It is anamorphic. When Universe has the Widescreen logo they use with the instructions that you must pick the correct display on your TV, you can be sure it's anamorphic (unless they mis-print the information, or it's some sort of bootleg).

Just curious, but how were you burnt on JSA and The Eye? JSA says it's letterboxed on the back of the case, and The Eye doesn't give any indication of what format is used, whch usually means it's letterboxed or fullscreen.

"Burned" was an overstatement. Basically I didn't look closely enough at them and just assumed they'd be anamorphic. Now I check beforehand.

Really? An HVD copy came free with my Skyworth player, but it has no English subs. I just skipped around to a few scenes, and I thought it looked pretty slick with some decent action scenes. I was planning to compare the picture quality of the HVD to the DVD.

Well, I bought the disc anyway and watched it last night. I thought the movie was decent. The hypnotism plot was a little goofy, but the action scenes were well done and the characters were interesting. I don't regret buying it.

The DVD is anamorphic, but the video transfer is pretty poor. The picture is very soft and the colors are muddy. There's also a lot of shimmer in the fine details. The HVD looks a lot better. It's 720p and has a better video transfer. No English subs, unfortunately.

On the other hand, the DTS track on the DVD blows away the very weak DD 5.1 on the HVD.

If it passes the Karena Lam test, it's probably worth owning.

... unless it's Truth or Dare 6th Floor Rear Flat.

Why did you buy an HVD player? Isn't that basically for mainland China only?

Curiosity.

I wrote a full review comparing the merits of EVD and HVD here:

The action is ok but I think the plot is so silly. The first scene's pretty intense, but overall it's still a decent movie to kill time.
